EWG 2 West Warwick 1

EWG played without Allstate goalie, starting center mid and two other starters. All will be ready for first game this week with South Kingstown.

Should be a interesting season to see which teams step up this fall.

By my count, the keeper for EWG has been called the 'ALLstate' keeper no less than 250,000 times on this thread alone. I have been around the scene, and I certainly knew AF from Lasalle. So I am curious because this keeper doesn't ring a bell. Which club does she play for in the spring? I know I am being a bit of smart***** but honestly not trolling. Like I said - curious who she is.

EWG gave up 30 goals last season; not a knock on their GK, simply the point that even AF benefited from LS defense. GK need to keep their teams in matches (no soft goals, occasionally make the incredible save), but they are still reliant on team defense.

Simpler explanation..4 girls..2 senior starters are down..coach needs to see in preseason who can fill in...because unlike previous coach who carried 27 or so girls he keeps 18-19...of course previous coach even with 27 varsity girls still brought up a girl from jv mid season

This coach was the reason the Ocean State academy program was a success...one has to wonder when ocean state had a successful academy program decent comp program for town team with 4 or so teams in maple including a high school girls team in that made d1 and a very talented u13 team why the program has fallen so far and been through a lot of coaches....speaks more about club leadership perhaps..

Last year's nk team underperformed for sure and this year's team has lots of returning starters and good young talent so we will see..even with all his drama and need to make the team his own little money making fiefdom the previous coach would be there still if he could have gotten the results from all the talent he had..so I am sure this coach only has a short window especially given the boys side wins state championships with arguably less talent for the boys competition

I think you are giving this guy way too much credit. This is the same guy that was hired as one of the NK middle school coaches a few years ago and backed out just before tryouts leaving the program to scramble to find a replacement. This is a guy that basically stopped showing up to the OSS academy practices without telling anyone leaving the other coaches to scramble and cover for him. (His replacement at OSS is a much better fit for that program.) He coached the core of the current HS team at OSS in U17 maple a couple of years ago. The NKHS team should have done well given they worked with him and played together for months in advance of the season. Then you saw the results on the field and you wonder if any of the players even knew each other.

What you say about his auditioning players in case of injury may be true. However, one of the injured players is a defender and, to my knowledge, none of the players being looked at are considered defenders. In fact, when he pulled players up last year they were always forwards (at the expense of more deserving players). The roster construction is a bit odd with 2 keepers, 4 defenders, 6 midfielder, and 7 - 8 forwards. If you made the team as a forward, it can't be a confidence boost to see JV players brought up in what is an already an overly populated position. Perhaps it reflects a flaw in his evaluation process.

Way too much credit is right. This team tanked last year because he doesn't understand how to manage the girls morale and self-confidence, much less have any tactical clue. You don't promise spots to players and then renege. You don't tell girls they had better perform or they will be replaced by a girl from JV (who he did call up but after one game she asked to go back to JV- smart kid!). He even told the parents this year he may swing kids DOWN from varsity, that's great for morale! The girls last year knew he messed up rosters when varsity and JV scrimmaged first two days and JV won both! To his credit he didn't do that this year :) Read anything put out by successful girls/womens coaches (ie/ Dicicco & Dorrance) and they all say its a critical component of coaching.

Watched this game and Mt Hope clearly outplayed Cumberland. Both scores from Cumberland were the result of 1v1 breakaways (one being a PK). I didn't see much team offense from Cumberland at all. Have no doubt they will get it sorted out.
