Mediocre is harsh! Words have meaning! D1 Has parody throughout the league with well balanced talent from top teams to the trailing teams. Most if not all teams posess premiere players with varying talents in soccer. These talented players play in various leagues and countries throughout the off varsity season. Each teams coach manages these gifts to their individual standards in hope of a playoff birth and the are of.a RI State championship! Only one team achieves this goal!!

Well balanced teams leads to close games. This year every team has a good chance to overcome challenges and obtain glory!!! Even BV.

D1 Has parody throughout the league.. perhaps you mean "parity" as the only parody is the way a handful of coaches act as if they know how to coach teenage female players.. although in reality, there is little humor in the way some of these coaches have their teams play.

there is not really "parity' in the league..if that was the case, you would not have some 30+ pt teams and some less than double digit total point teams. You would also expect to see more ties, but this season (taking out EWG and Vets) there are 25% fewer tied matches than last year.

similarly, in looking at goals scored, last year the average (excluding EWG since their D2 stats would bias upward) goals per team was 26 and the split was even in terms of teams above or below that average; this year the average is closer to 20 (again, close to a 25% drop) and more teams were below the average than above.

Meaning, at least statistically, this year compared to last there are a few pretty sure top teams, a few pretty sure bad teams, and a group in the middle (7 to 11) that are pretty even amongst themselves but have almost not shot against the upper group.

Take those 7 through 11 teams against the top 6 seeds..that is 30 possible matches..and you have only 2 wins by the lower group (and NK over Portsmouth and SK over Smithfield are against both the two lowest seeds in the upper group and frankly the two teams that have either horrible coaching and the most inconsistent performances among the teams with better talent).

Yes, there were some ties, but that also reflects the point on the 25% decrease in goal scored..whether that is the emergence of more elite GK or the decline in goal scorers is a bit of chicken or the egg; however, anemic offenses do mean you'll see more 0 - 0 or 1 -1..
however, as also noted, overall ties are down so if there was really more parity, the weak offenses should have created more ties (my own feeling is this is a reflection of the lack of emphasis on finishing in the youth programs and the horrible level of hs coaches in coaching tactics) .

Bottom line -- there is less parity..there is a reason why the top 4 or 5 seeds are the ones in the semis..just like what will occur this year (although I give Smithfield a 50/50 chance to making to semis)

if you want more parity, those all knowing gurus who comprise the RIIL soccer committee should have a yearly alignment process that is forward (ie. looks at the current varsity roster and JV performance) looking, not backward.

Perhaps you meant "roughest" defense? MH was 12th in goals allowed..why would the outcome be much difference than the 5-1 Smithfield win in the regular season?

I do agree a MH win would be an upset, but it would be the first one.. Cumberland over NK is only an upset to the extent Cumberland was a lower seed by the standings..why is it an upset when Cumberland won 3-0 in the regular season? NK is an overated team just like last year..

Smithfield will fall with MH at full strength with 12 premiere player and a recruited college track scholarship returning to health! Though not known due to injury is by far the fastest girl in the state on any soccer field!!!!!

Smithfield will fall and it will be a upset like cumberland Cumberlandite !!!

Since you Mt Hopers used to be in D2 with EWG not too long ago, you are forgiven for cheering them on but don't get too crazy. One player cannot carry a team through the D1 season like she could in D2. But all of your other predictions look good and for some reason, I can see a MH win tomorrow against Smithfield. They have been inconsistent and could easily flop at home again.

Mt Hope will hav a tough time at Smithfield,but can deinately win that one. Might as well save Smithfielders the trouble of getting whooped by Bay View again. I know BV is hoping to meet the sentinels one more time, maybe this time they'll hang 7 or 8 on them instead of just 5.
