Exactly, the most likely D1 candidates on Bayside U16 are not the offensive players (too small,slow) its the defenders and keeper.

they probably won't be on projio "all state" list anytime soon but they'll be on college coach radar.

There are great high school players (speed, footskills, etc) and there are great potential college players (size, toughness, book and soccer smarts, etc), if you are one, it doesn't mean you are the other.

There's a reason why college coaches don't go watch high school soccer games even the state fianls.

Watch college teams and you will find the players fit the latter type player (size, toughness, smarts). Small quick players do well through high school but there are few at the college level.

I wouldn't expect too much in terms of college success/signings in the next couple years. The best source of talent is Bayside U16 and 1 or 2 might get some D1 interest from that team - the rest are likely D2 or D3.

I've seen RI soccer develop over many years, and every year about 1% of high school senior get D1 college roster spots. That means about 3 or 4 players go on to play D1 in college. There were never more than 5 in one class that I can remember, so really aside from the class of 2012, which was exceptional, the class of 2013 put 4 players in D1 and the class of 2014 so far has 3 headed to D1--consistent with about every other class over the last 20 or so years. I would think that there will always be 3-4 that go on to D1 programs. SOrry I cannot keep track of D2 and D3 but those players deserve congratulations as well.

Please be reminded that not all players who receive offers to play for D1 schools opt to play D1. Several players choose a D2 or D3 school for academic aid or other reasons. Counting who actuall plays D1 is not a reflection of who could have played D1.

Some high school coaches still think an all-stet is one that heads every ball she's near and kicks it really far because she's strong.

Great in high school, will never earn you a second look at college level.

Glad you said some high school coaches, there are several very good coaches and All State needs to get their votes to be selected. There are many parts for a player selected she many be a good player but causes issues on the team, opposing coaches hear and see behavior that fans do not hear/see. A player may not be rewarded for poor attitude, a role model will get the vote most times over a player if they are close in talent. Players have been selected over the players coach wishes in the past. The first six players everyone can agree with it is the next ten that everyone has their own order.

I think D1 standings may be closer this year then last with EWG now there. I am not saying EWG will be a power but I believe teams will have a more competitive game then when they played Warwick Vets. Some teams that won against Vets may now have a tie or possibly a lose. This is why I believe the standings may tighten up. D2 will now be wide open with Pilgrim having a slight edge.

if you saw the ocean state summer cup game last week between Toll Gate and Ewg, you would not worry much about this team moving up to D1. I can't beleive they made such a move.

You can not go by summer cup many coaches only use incoming freshman to see what they have. I am not from EWG but I do know the asst. coach and EWG is one of those teams that use freshman and JV players. I would need to check but I believe they do not use last year varsity starters or only use one or two now and then. I am not the post you answered to just adding additional info.

Check out last year summer league results and see how meaningful they are. Smithfield was awful in summer league but won the State Championship.

Between kids who are not there or hurt or coaches letting all the kids play equal time the results are meaningless-

I know a lot of kids on LaSalle, I know a lot of kids on EG, I know a lot of kids on Prout, I know a couple kids on North Smithfield, I know a couple on Bayview, I know a couple on NK/SK.

I know 1 on EWG, I know 0 on Cumberland, nuff said.

what do you define as the "highest level of soccer?" Do you have to pay to play on a team like Bruno or are you talking about the strongest Superliga teams that have won the Cape Cod tourney, or Nashua, or even State Cup? Some snobby types think you have to play on the big money teams to be good.

Don't believe the Bayside hype, my friend. There is a huge difference between finishing last (or at the bottom) of a "regional league" (such as NEP...honk!) and ECNL.

Any skills my child gains from club soccer is gravy. I'm paying so I can tell the other parents at the county club that my child belongs to an "elite" team.
