For their 10 to 1 player ratio (your numbers, not mine) I'm not seeing that much of a difference between regional results for RI vs MA teams. We are all just little fish in the giant world of soccer. Playing for Stars or Scorps or NEFC only marginally improves results, and that's just for those players in those clubs that play on the top team in their age group. Not exactly sure why someone would want to spend even more money and travel to MA with slim chances of having any better results in the long run. Being best in RI might not be as big as being best in MA, but I'm quite sure that neither state has too many teams that can say they are Best in the Region. So why is it bad to be proud of being the best in whatever state or league you play in? I'm sure if your Kid was on a RI State Cup Champion team, you'd go around saying "we really suck because the MA State Cup Champion is better than us". Sure the best RI kids inevitably end up playing in MA, but that is more a function of the 10 to 1 player ratio you talk about than a function of the MA clubs being light years ahead of RI in terms of coaching or training. If MA bordered NJ or PA you'd see the same exact thing happening with the top players in MA migrating to either NJ or PA. It only makes sense for the truly top-level elite players to try and earn a spot on a regional power team in MA if they are from RI. Everyone else is wasting a lot of time and money chasing a dream (nightmare).

Size of state isn't everything.
Bayside just sets it's sights too low. They are fine with winning RI State Cup and going to Regionals every year.
As a club, they don't do the things that the top clubs do, they don't have strong coaches, and they don't have a structure.
There are players in Southern Mass, Eastern CT ready to be picked up by a strong club around Providence. Providence has the population necessary to support a good club. But no one seems to want to start one.

My point is RI is a weak and small soccer state, it is not hard to corner the market. If any of the RI teams had to actually compete in MA State cup (where most RI club teams play league games), I doubt you would see one team past the Semis. RI has so few clubs that actually compete in RI State cup. For example, 12G last year there were what? 4 clubs? U12B had 3. Most states have to go through more than 3- 4 clubs to win a State Cup!

I want my kid to have fun and I want to have fun watching her fave fun. If the fun stops then premier stops too. I don't want to drive an hour and a half to get to practice. And by the way, very few kids are good enough to play for the top stars teams and other similar teams. If your kid is good enough to make the "A" team then you are looking at spending $10,000 (club fees plus travel expenses)to play soccer. And in the end what do you have?

? Last time I checked CFC and Oakwood were pretty good too and it's just as far for half of RIers.

I have a couple of big problems with some of the past few posts.
Do RI families really know how much other clubs cost? Do they really think Bayside is cheaper than the stronger Massachusetts clubs being discussed? It's nonsense. Bayside is just as expensive, and the reason Bayside teams don't go to better tournaments is they have trouble competing in New England.
And the biggest complaint I have is that the reason Bayside doesn't produce better teams and players is that they aren't as good at it. Go to a practice session at Stars, NEFC, Scorpions, even MPS, it's like a different game, it's like these clubs teach the kids a different game than Bayside teaches.
RI families at Bayside need to wake up and get out into the real world.

All the coaches there are either family or present/past friends of JMA.

Exactly right!!! These clubs are not more expensive, most of them are a bit less or level. It can be a bit more travel, because they can (and do) compete well at a regional level. But wow, if you watch them compete, you will see some good soccer! I am starting to think MPS coming into RI may be a good thing. These kids play a clean, skilled, technical game of soccer that you will never see at Bayside. I am not saying this in an insulting way. If you see it, you will think the same. We just don't have that at ANY club in RI, at least not at the younger, teaching age groups. We are starting kids off behind the nearest competition, even at the championship clubs. That does not say alot for soccer in RI.

What I have experience watching MPS is good ball movement and a planned attack and good fundamental defense. Over the long haul, MPS would be fantastic for RI Soccer

They met again at U14 and the MPS team was now much better the tied 2-2. And at U15 the MPS team was the superior team across the board, MPS won 3-1. So what it came down to was that the RI team had the superior athletes and MPS had the better trained team.
