    Division 2 soccer

Why is it that D2 soccer schools are not household names? I am always hearing about D1 and D3 schools, but D2 schools seem to be almost invisible.

Speaking very generally, D2 schools are not academic powerhouses. There are good schools in D2.

Actually few are of academic quality, of those some are real "specialty schools like Embry Ridde or CO School of Mines. Peruse the lists - many you won't even recognize. There's also fewer D2 programs (220-ish vs 335 D1 and 440 D3 for women) and fewer scholarships per team vs D1. Average scholarship amounts are also much less, but the school tuitions tend to run less as well

then there's the bragging rights - more soccer families are middle to upper income, live in nicer towns, better school districts etc. Many would rather their kid be at a prestigious name school (D1 or D3) even without soccer than at most D2s.

Don't get me wrong - one of mine had a great experience at a D2 school but they had learning issues and struggled some in school. That was the right place for them. D2 obviously is for thousands of others. But there's reasons no one talks about it

Not the op but several D2s have won national titles with rosters filled with internationals. But there's also highly successful teams without stacked rosters.

I've seen rosters of 40 plus players on D2 rosters with miserable results. D2 is just an enigma .

It's a lot like D3 - the top 30 or so teams are solid but it drops like a stone after that. Players that can't land D1 or don't want it might be happy playing on club teams at bigger D1 schools. If you have a good student don't sacrifice academics to play soccer and most D2s are weak academically
