Buyer beware, and don't expect an honest answer from coaches either. If you're getting some good money the coach wants you but you'll still battle for PT. If you're not getting much of anything you're a practice cone. Enjoy warming the bench and the cool team swag for a year or two

They had 35 this year, so "close to 40" isn't all that different.

Look around at other mid major programs in the region. They all carry big rosters.

There is no specific answer. Numbers depend on factors such as current team size, how many 5th years are returning and positional needs, Teams will have as few as 5 to 10 or more freshman coming in next year. Any more than that then those players are told they are walk ons and have to earn their playing time and be part of the traveling squad.

Cold hard reality is many players will be little more than practice cones. It's not even so much how large the issue is but who is getting the most PT. There's the starters and first off the bench racking up the minutes played stats. You want to be in that group. Then there's another group that get some solid minutes especially in easier games. They may be younger and will earn more time. Then there's a good number that get token to no minutes. This last group will vary the most in size depending on how big the roster is.

Always take close look at the numbers, who is playing and what their backgrounds are. If you're worried you might be in the last group you probably will be.

If that is true then there are big changes ahead. A new coach who has now had a year to access players at training and in games. When the season ended the coach had talks with each player individually and said what needed to be said with the player positive and negative. If there is a big class coming in then the coach wants there “type” of player going forward. Most of these players have little or no options entering the transfer portal. Coaches are looking for transfers from bigger programs who have had more playing time.

It’s college so presumably parents are not complaining and definitely not parents of players not seeing the field.

Several players will.drop out realizing they will never play. Some are ok being a cone just to be a part of a team. Cones don't get athletic money or travel with the team so it doesn't cost a program anything

I have no respect for anyone who refers to any player on this team or any team in a derogatory manner. Any player on a college team regardless of how much you play is part of this team. They dedicate themselves to being student/athletes and deserve to be treated with respect no admiration. To refer to them as a Practice cone” is demeaning and immature. That may be your daughter’s “station in life” being seen as a “cone” someday and you wouldn’t like it. I respect every player on any team D1-D3 who play for the love of soccer and want to be part of a team.

agree that "cone" guy is a total loser. The bottom line is that regardless of how much you play or don't play over your 4 years at this school or any school, organized team based soccer comes to an end. For most of these kids, they've played the game their entire life and love being around it and the team serves as a huge part of their college experience. All of these young women are going to be going professional in something other than soccer in very short order. Dealing with adversity and being part of team are pretty good skillsets to take to the next level.

As someone who has many recent college grads working in my organization, I can tell you that college athletes are coveted in the workplace. The deal with a lot of BS and are very good at time management. I can tell you that playing time isn't a consideration for students we recruit!

The reality is that many will not get much P/T going forward. There are 14 or so new recruits coming in last I heard. Maybe some of the upperclass already dropped out which is why the incoming squad is so large. No one seems to be happy with that large of a group.

That is what happens when a new coach has had time to watch and make a determination about every hold over player on the team. The new Coach wants there players, those that fit into there system. That’s how it goes. That’s college soccer. If a player is not happy after talking to the coach then the student/athlete has options.
