Younger Players Guesting for League Games

What are your feelings about teams that have younger players guest play for league games? i.e. having a U13 player on the roster for a U14 game. Why do some teams do this? Is it to incentivize the U13 to stay at the club b/c of extra game minutes? Even though it is sure to piss off the parent of the U14 player being subbed-out for the U13's bonus time? Is it pushy U13 parents in this example?

Yes, it’s mainly to appease a strong kid and keep them from leaving. We’ve seen it backfire though when the kid is no longer invited to play up. Some families get so fixed on having their kid play up as some kind of a badge of honor.

It almost always backfires in some form

It is to please the parents of the kids that are strong players. Makes them feel special and keeps them at the club. It sometimes causes a divide among teammates if they don’t get asked to play up or miss something in their own age group to attend something with the older team. It’s not a good scenario all the time

I've seen it a few times. Sometimes where the older team needed the younger player to add extra offense in a competitive game, and I've also seen it where it makes no sense at all (meaning, the player doesn't add anything special and all it does is limit minutes of older solid players). The second example causes lots of resentment. Younger kid is effectively getting more game time (for the same club fee) at the expense of other players who didn't even need the "help" in the league game.

If you are good enough to play up for ur club then your club is not that good. You don’t see this at the top clubs. So stop being weak and move your kid to where they belong. The clubs do this to appease the parents and not lose the kid. But it’s so counter productive. For the kid and other kids but especially the club. But we all know how poorly most clubs are run and how most of these parents who can’t walk and chew bubble gum think it’s a badge of honor to play up. Come on guy!

All depends on how narrowly you want to define 'top'.

I've seen it mostly when the older team is short players for a specific game and they need to call up players either from a second team their year, or someone in a younger year.

Either way club soccer is a shady business

But if It is for “extra minutes” then it is not a good league since you can’t play for 2 teams on the same day in the top leagues, right?

This is a uneducated comment. The New York Redd Bulls, NYCFC and Philadelphia Union all have players playing up at every single age group. They are not doing it to appease parents at all. You are implying that these clubs are not that good. You see this practice done at every top club in the country. You also see it at lower level clubs for other reasons. Sometimes the right reasons, sometimes the wrong reasons, as with everything. Some are playing up to appease pushy parents, like you said. Some are being giving minutes at an older age to challenge the kid and aid in their development.. be it playing against better competition, or just bigger faster kids. Sometimes the older team is the weaker team, but the game is still faster / Bigger and poses a challenge, and sometimes the older team is the better team and the child is put in to challenge him.

on a side note,,,,, Guest players are not allowed for league games. Playing on a year older team in the same club isnt reffered to as a "guest player". its called a club pass. Guest players are players from a different club playing for your club. that is allowed at most tournaments.
