Almost none can. In middle school GKs need more specialized training (and are pushed to specialize themselves if they have been doing net and field). A field only player who maybe held their own from time to time before just won't keep up with a trained gk. Just like kid who was splitting net and field before will fall behind on their field skills by missing team practices and rarely if ever playing on the field any longer

18 is ideal, 16 field players and 2 GK. Injuries happen.

Every club is different. My kid’s U15 club has 21. We only dress 18. 3 don’t play each league game. To be fair the coaches have been consistent about the standards and playing time. Kids compete for time.

MFA Mercer boys has 50+ boys in multiple HS age groups for *2* teams (just look at the TGS rosters). I have an 07 and they have 20 kids in the pool sitting out each match day. I asked about having a third team play EDP and was told it was fine since they have ~30 games left. I've never seen a more blatant and ridiculous money grab.

yet all over this board people post about how we cant dilute the badges, etc. its all bull****. there can be way more teams playing in ECNL , MLSN and GA but its the clubs that are preventing this from happening.

It's the leagues that decide who's in and who isn't. There's an application process that considers ability to compete, coaching staff, facilities, geographic saturation or absence of enough in a region. Bigger isn't always better, and truthfully there's some bottom dweller clubs that should be relegated to tighten things up. However that also doesn't mean there's a dozen lower clubs that should be admitted up.

That's asinine. Never join a team with 20+ unless it's a TOP club AND your kid is a starter. The last thing you want is your kid languishing on a big bench. Even if the coaching is great, they need to PLAY. Plus more players = more drama.

Here's the RL roster sizes for MFA Mercer boys:

                    06: 26
                    07: 28
                    08: 22
                    09: 22
                    10: 23
                    11: 21

The biggest pool (07s) could have 3 teams and still not dress everyone. The smallest pool (11s--12 year olds!) is not dressing 3 each match day.

20/21 is probably about the right number... I get it you want to see your kid play... but the truth is they can't run that much if you are playing high tempo game.
                      - on that roster is probably 2 goalies - one who dresses for a game. If you only carry one goalie... you better have a back up stud on the team below.
                      - that leaves 18/19 field players...1 to 2 are injured/sick at any given point

so you really have a full roster or maybe a game day roster of 17 with 6 subs. Which is fine.

Perfect, don't need anything more. Anything more is just club$ grabbing at your wallet

Much closer to $4k than $3k. 06 and 07 pools together are bringing in more than $400k. And they have one full pitch to train on...

at these big clubs that attract the badge chasers with 25-30 kid rosters, it's a given that the majority of the roster sees little field time on match day, but how do the coaches handle training sessions with a 25-30 kid roster? do the players beyond the top 11 even get high quality training?
