Seacoast United’s U17 Girls advanced to the Region I Finals on Tuesday, July 3rd, where they faced the Virginia State Champions VSA Heat Blue. In a match that would be forced to overtime, VSA topped SUSC by the score of 2-1.
In the first half, Seacoast was called for a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for VSA, however they would miss and the game remained scoreless at the half.
Seacoast United was awarded a penalty early in the 2nd half. Rachel Hill stepped up for the shot and was stopped by the VSA goalkeeper, however the referee determined that the goalie moved off her line too early. Carly Gould would be called upon for the retake, and converted to give Seacoast a 1-0 lead.
VSA responded, scoring roughly 15 minutes later to equalize. With the last play in regulation, Seacoast United would hit the underside of the crossbar, forcing the goalkeeper to clear the ball off the line with just seconds remaining.
The 30-minute overtime was split into two 15-minute halves, and it would come down to the final 5 minutes before VSA scored the go-ahead goal and the eventual game winner for the Region I crown and the bid to advance to the USYSA Nationals in South Carolina later this month.
After the preliminary games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the team finished with a 3-0 record, securing first place in Group C and the automatic bid into the semi-final round on Monday.
In Friday’s game vs. Delaware (KSC Courage), Seacoast United saw 4 goals from striker Rachel Hill and went on to win 7-0. Saturday’s match vs. Connecticut (CFC United) was played in stifling heat, but again SUSC was ready to put in a great effort and defeated the CT State Champions by the score of 7-1. Outside back Allie Day scored twice in the win.
Sunday’s matchup was set against Eastern Pennsylvania (LDC Elite 94/95), a strong squad who regularly scrimmages against boys’ teams. The match was extremely tight and physical, neither team really creating any scoring opportunities. With 10 minutes remaining, Kayla Swasey scored off of a Rachel Hill rebound for the 1-0 victory.
The semi final on Monday morning over New York East (NY Rush Patriots ’95) produced a 3-2 victory, extending the team's stay in Pennsylvania for one more day.
