maybe consummate low D1s with good academics. For that I would say bottom 30 D1 because #100-170 move up or down every year. For example Princeton was ranked 150 last year but is 59 this year.

Apparently he turned down D1 Lehigh for Tufts. Which makes sense.

However, the conclusion that they don't belong in D3 is asinine. Tufts is quite similar to the UAA schools, which are all somewhat larger research universities in urban areas with excellent academics. There's no reason that schools like that have to go D1, and indeed the UAA has been the strongest league in D3 soccer over the last couple of years.

Another consideration in the process for the top academic D3 schools. Many of these schools are relatively small (1500-2500 students, think Bowdoin, Colby, Amherst). The coaches place a major emphasis on academics coming in. As a coach told me, if someone cannot cut the academics, there is no place to hide academic performance given the school is small. Going to a larger D1 school offers both support but may also offer less stringent academic programs (in addition to challenging ones).
My son was recruited by lower level D1 (from a soccer perspective) and top level D3 (from a soccer perspective). In all cases he was looking for a top 100 academic program. Ending out taking the D3 route as it was the best fit for him both academically and for soccer. Soccer did help him get the attention of some schools he may not have otherwise - lots of kids do not get into these schools even with exception academics, but soccer helps
One last consideration is that if your son (or daughter) is looking to study in the sciences or pre-med, D1 is even more challenging. Time commitment for labs, research often will conflict with a D1 training schedule making it hard (not impossible) to do both.

^^^ in addition to above, D1 commitments make doing study abroad and internships difficult as well.
