Why should the country turn away the world's best and brightest? They come here to study and then live and become citizens and drive a disproportionate share of entrepreneurship, new job growth, patents granted. Sure, capitalistic competition is a bitch if you're trying to play fortnite 8 hours a day but someone has to make stuff happen.

Where did you get the idea they were staying? The largest group, the Chinese, are getting a top US education then returning home to kick our butts.

Indian reservations are their own separate worlds. Instead of hunting for individual victims, a liberal specialty, ask the tribal leaders what they want. Do they prefer to return to hunter gatherers, build a casino, or what. Whatever course they take, someone will be unhappy.

We are all immigrants. The question is the amount. 40-75% is too high imo. And many of those aren't immigrants. They are leaving, as the earlier link points out.

what school has 75%? None. Even a 40% is a rarity

I only skimmed the article but that was long enough to gather international students aren't staying at historical levels, even though most would give their right hands to do so, because of more attractive econonomies back home, visa struggles, and cultural challenges including the bamboo ceiling.

In other words, we have a GREAT country that attracts the best and brightest and though we've never made it easy to come and stay, we are making it much more difficult. And these are the people who we, theoretically, would want to attract, as opposed to those from the caravan (which, IMHO, by and large also make significant contributions).

Also, note that these international students are paying full tuition. Don't go thinking they're here for free. If you're upset you didn't get into the MBA program of your choice, you should have studied harder.

Grad school is s different beast. A lot more research being done there, especially MIT.

We already are losing out - international applications and enrollments are down in the US while international students seek out more friendly environs like Canada and Australia. In the long run that hurts us academically, competitively, in R&D, medicine....

Perhaps....but parallel to this is the reality that our own lower school education has weakened. This is shown internationally. Perhaps we need to embrace older techniques with more stringent requirements and expectations of our children. Some stress may not be a bad thing at all.

we are faltering....but not because there might be fewer international students.... but because we are failing our own.

No doubt our pre K to 12th education system is slipping rapidly. We're graduating more kids and sending them to college. But more universities are having to add remedial programs for math and English because students aren't prepared. However I don't agree with the stress part. Our kids are already under enormous pressure. You couldn't pay me to be a high school student right now.

what kind of stress? social stress?
I might agree with this but only because there is excessive political correctness in a way that kids, especially boys, are not permitted to express themselves. I don't mean rape or bullying, but they get hammered for insignificant utterances because any one of a thousand different social groups gets offended.

Class stress...academics? I don't think there is enough.
