You'd feel very differently if it were your kid, right? No easy answers on this one, but at least for appearances I agree there should be no exceptions. There's already charges of favoritism, nepotism, special treatment etc in DA, so when you throw in kids at pricey prep schools (even if they're on financial need scholarships) it just adds to the air of privilege

I have no connection with Academies at all (i.e. admitting ignorance on topic). Isn't the general "rule" no waivers? So, I get it that there are ways around the system, etc... but could it be that some teams/coaches take that to be the actual RULE to be followed. In which case,*why argue that? I get it that it may make a possible weaker team, but honestly... what about all the other players who follow the rules, give up HS and then play on a team where they have a few of their better players as no-shows until spring? I mean that must have a negative effect on the players who do play by the rules. What a strange situation.

Also unfair for those kids who decide not to go to a prep school so they can pla academy the full 10 months, but then end up only getting decent playing time the first half of the year due to being sidelined by prep school kids sweeping in the second half of the year.

one of the many issues with waivers. also throws off team lineups, positions, etc. it's no wonder some clubs have started saying no altogether.

I get that people think it's a bad idea to give waivers, but "unfair"? Waivers go to better players, and better players get preferential treatment in so many ways- more minutes, waived fees, get named the captain, etc. It's not like the teams want to give the waivers, but they do it when they think they have to.

Right, the prep school kids are already getting a leg up academically, and many play on fairly good school teams in the fall. Are these really the kids who need exceptions made for them, while other kids are giving up either attending a prep school or playing on their high school teams?

I think the boys ECNL might be the answer to this, if it gets off the ground. The prep school kids can funnel onto ECNL teams after the high school season is over, and still play high quality soccer (especially if top players from the best schools combine on a team, similar to what Black Rock is doing now).

So is it ok to deny an underprivileged kid that opportunity or just those who can get into prep school on their own/pay for it? It's actually kind of surprising there hasn't been a lawsuit over this given our litigious society. Playing in DA isn't a right of course, but never put it past a parent who thinks their kid is entitled to something. Also keep in mind that is mostly an Northeastern thing and overall isn't a big issue across all of DA.

Problem with the scenario you lay out is players will always want to play in the "top league." Most prep school players have no trouble getting recruited, partly because of good grades. So in theory they'd be fine playing ECNL (assuming it delivers a good college platform as promised).

Nothing strange about it actually seeing that waivers were created especially in this area where the number of prep schools far out number other areas in the country.. so taking away the waivers is going to create some push back for those caught in the middle. The ones grandfathered should however continue to get what they were promised.

Right. Any grandfathered shouldn't be an issue of course. Maybe a new look at the policy should be implemented going forward.

Can't say I disagree with the kid walking away. It's that mindset and attitude that gives that kid his "edge" and gritiness. He left on his own terms and not going to pander to the Revs by doing the dead man walking thing and play in their tournament. He has plenty of opportunities that have already come his way. He'll write his own college ticket without a doubt.

The Revs players who were cut but still hanging on with training and making the trip to Indianapolis are being pussified by their parents. Not the right message that's being put out to them if you ask me.
