The groups for the 2016/2017 Development Academy playoffs are out. No. 1 seed Atlanta United was drawn into Group B, and looks to be one of the favorites at the event. Defending National Champion FC Dallas is the top team in Group C. Six of the top eight seeds at the U18 playoffs are MLS academies.
Despite the dominance from the MLS youth teams, there have been challenges from non-MLS teams along the way. This year, there are a number of non-MLS clubs with eyes for the title. TopDrawerSoccer takes a look at some of the sleepers to watch in the U18 Development Academy playoffs.

FC Boston Bolts was drawn into a very difficult group with Atlanta United, LA Galaxy, and Sporting Kansas City. The lone non-MLS team is going to need a lot of good breaks in order to survive the challenge in Indiana and advance from group play. The reason to believe in Boston is the defense. With Wilhelm Jacques leading the way, Boston Bolts have a shot to pull off some upsets in this group. Goalkeeper James Swomley logged 12 shutouts in 24 games this season. Ryan Clare, Dylan Curran, Riad El Moukhtari, Julio Fulcar, and Joseph Morrison have been the key players this year.
Forward Kyle Holcomb makes Pateadores one of the teams to watch in the Development Academy playoffs. Holcomb, born in 2000, scored 26 goals in 27 games while playing up an age group this season. His play helped lead Pateadores to a 17-8-11 record this season, and the No. 19 seed in the playoffs. Pateadores take on Orlando City, Indiana Fire Academy, and PDA in Group G play. The Southern California club will be counting on Raul Giovanni Miglietti, Kevin Reyes, Aidan Marmion, and Declan Gaffney to lead the way during this season’s playoff run.

The Dallas Texans ended the season with three wins from four games including a victory over local rival FC Dallas. The nine points from four games allowed Dallas Texans to nab the No. 10 spot in the Wild Card standings. Dominick Hernandez and Edward Bass have been the top scorers for Dallas Texans with 10 and 9 goals respectively. Davis Smith and Omar Beltran have also been terrific for Texans this season and key players to helping them get out of Group H in the playoffs.
Sacramento Republic made it out of Group Play last season in the U18 age group and could be in line to do it again this year. Republic went 17-11-4 this season and earned the No. 20 seed in the playoffs as the third place finisher in the Northwest Division. Francis Avoce has been the leading scorer for Republic this season with 18 goals in 23 starts. Goalkeepers Cameron Douglas and Hector Grajeda have also been terrific this year. Republic has a chance to pull off some upsets in Group D with games looming against Sockers FC, Montreal Impact, and Texans SC Houston.
Weston FC might be the most talented team in this age group with the full roster available, but there is always a question if whether the full team will be there. If the Florida team has full use of the squad, Weston FC should be considered the favorite in Group A. U.S. U17 Men’s National Team midfielder George Acosta has not played for the Weston FC U18 team this year, but he is on the roster and an option for the team in Indiana. Alfred Perez, Jesus Alberto Luna, and Matias Barraza have been the top scorers this year. Defenders Jake Walker, Luca Defreitas-Hansen, and Tomas Echeverria have all been terrific this year as well.

Revs snagged up 2 Bolts 03s. Puts those two out of their misery. Replacements brought in are quite not very good players. The 03 Center Back who left is very good, the other kid a forward is not. I think the Revs just looked at how many goals he scored and said we want him. Or they simply want to make the Bolts look bad because this is the only age group at which they can do so. BA will sit back and laugh when in two years all the Revs rejects go to Bolts and beat Revs. You would think the Revs learned their lesson.
