I had heard this from the Boston College coach. His foreign students don't count against his athletic scholarships. Sure the weaker conferences and schools don't do this but in the ACC, Big East and Ivies they do.

Also for the Ivies they will target a specific number of foreign student. For example with Cornell the whole athletic department sponsors a few foreign students (Cornell uses those for hockey players).

You need to be very targeted in selecting schools (you need to think about this in the 9th grade). Do you homework.

Big day today in the Revs dysfunctional family. This thread will hit 1,000 pages and 10,000 posts. That automatically bumps it into their meta algorithms for hierarchical web caches. It will bump this thread closer to the top of any New England Revolution searches. Traffic to this thread is about to increase.

You came up with a statistic of 50% of D1 players are foreign by talking to the BC coach? Seems sound to me.

Not the op but it's consistent with this course
          http://scholarshipstats.com/soccer.html

Some D1s have a good number, like 7-10 but still not 50% It's all over the board with some having more, some less. I saw a few D2 rosters that were almost all internationals.

As for scholarships I've known several international players and absolutely they got money to come here, good money. There has to be a financial incentive for at least some to come to the U.S. It costs very little to attend university in Europe or South America and very few probably have wealthy parents that can afford US tuition. International students don't qualify for any federal loans or grans, only private (like merit $). Also, when many internationals are the top players on teams that is where the coach will allocate their money, to their impact players.

Also look at the incoming freshman class (maybe 6 players). Many leave after a year for the MLS and then there are transfers to fill out the older players on the team. But you are competing with the other incoming freshman.

Why leave college after one year for the MLS?

Because college soccer is a developmental dead end. If you want to go pro the sooner you get in the better. Playing a year in college gives you chance to prove yourself at a higher level than just coming out of HS. But you don't want to stay forever if you want to be a pro. Injury risk also, just like to other college sports

International players often come here to get a shot at a pro career, not necessarily because they want to play in college. They were rejected by international clubs abut still have a dream. Many play and do well in MLS. Something like the MLS draft last year was international players.

The transfer rate in men's soccer is higher than women's. If I can find the graph I'll post it, but there is NCAA data to back it up. i was surprised. People say it's higher for women because of early recruiting. But I think men are less emotionally attached to teams/schools and that international players also are more likely to be starters, a wake up call for US players.

Not crazy, the whole reason for the academy is to develop homegrown players.

Poster is right - you don't want to stay in college if that is your goal - but this applies to very few players. It applies to many international players who are giving their last shot with MLS. If you're at the Revs? GO TO COLLEGE.

You have 1001 pages of this thread to read and you need to ask? The fact remains that they have an academy to produce homegrown players and my kid wants to be one. Plenty of dreams don’t work out, that’s life.
