fun fact: the GOP had voted to lower funding for embassy security before Benghazi. They also were the ones that kept Benghazi hearings going for FOUR YEARS without out anything ever coming from it. You invoke the 5th because the answer you are asked to give may expose you to criminal liability. Meaning that he didn't want to face criminal prosecution.

When you invoke the 5th in a civil case that automatically results in an adverse inference against you if there are other collaborating facts/evidence. Meaning that if he was asked whether he raped his wife as she testified he did and he took the 5th, the inference would be that he did rape her for purposes of civil liability, but obviously not criminal liability.
