Friend who is an OR tech (not even a nurse but literally hands instruments to surgeons) is running around checking staff temperatures, moving patients and other duties not at all parr of their normal duties because the hospital is so short staffed. Too many patients + docs, nurses and others sick or in quarantine.

Nurses are busy being nurses. A lot of states are relying on teams from pharmacies to come in and vaccinate. But they also need staffing, supplies etc which all costs money. Few facilities can handle the extra cold storage requirements which is also slowing things down.

CT seems to be doing better than average

According to a report from Bloomberg News, about 2.13 million people as of Monday had received a vaccine dose. That’s not only far short of the initial Operation Warp Speed goal, it’s also less than 20% of the doses initially sent to states, indicating some states are lagging with their vaccination distribution. The same report shows that Connecticut has so far distributed a significantly higher 31% of its doses.

Dr. Deidre Gifford, Connecticut’s acting public health commissioner, said Monday that “a lot of things are working well” with the state’s vaccination rollout.

Texas is struggling to vaccinate. They made it available to all seniors and people are not coming to get it. The vaccine is just sitting on the shelf because of low demand.
It may be a red state blue state issue. Red states don’t trust the government the way Democrats do.

Sure employers can require vaccine. Here is the issue. It will go to court and they must show it to be safe and effective to require it. That is going to be very difficult right now. Just no time to show a mRNA vaccine to be safe in the long term. Vaccine manufacturers are off the hook for liability but they employers who be on the hook if they require it. The employers would be financially responsible for adverse reactions. Let’s say 1 in 5,000,000 die after vaccine. Family sues for wrongful death. $10,000,000 is the current ball park for a wrongful death suit. Not worth it.
Employers don’t want any part of this liability.

No deaths so far, just some very rare cases of adverse reactions. HCW know the risks and benefits but there will be some who still won't get it. Not sure I want anyone involved with my healthcare that doesn't believe in vaccines. I know multiple nurses and docs who have already been vaccinated and others who are next in line. They don't want Covid and don't want to bring it home to their families. Even if they're in fields that aren't high risk (like say a urology practice) all the covid protocols, PPE needs etc have been a real strain in their everyday jobs. The strain on hospital personnel can't be emphasized enough. There will be a lot of PTSD after this nightmare ends.

It will be interesting to see what happens during the transition period when some people have been vaccinated and others not. Do you wear your mask if you're vaccinated just to avoid angry glares? Do anti maskers claim they're vaccinated to avoid wearing one? At one point can the state ease up on the requirement?
