That was a good win for Santa Fe. Ridgeview is a good team. Did they get there football players back?

I don't know who Ridgeview may have been missing. I get the feeling they did not have their full compliment of players though. Santa Fe earned a solid victory but they will have to continue to focus for the rest of the year. Right now they have the inside track toward the #1 seed with this victory but they still have to play 5 more district games. Two years ago they beat Ridgeview by a similar score only to lose to them in the District semis. Last year they beat Middleburg twice during the regular season but again lost in the District semis. The season has a long way to go and teams evolve over it's course. No telling where these two teams will be come January. Still, this is a good victory for Santa Fe and a little setback for Ridgeview. It indicates at the very least that Santa Fe has the potential to do something good this year. What they will do with that potential remains to be seen.

The 4-1 victory versus Ridgeview yesterday was big for Santa Fe on several counts. First of all they beat the defending District champions rather handily, who figured to be their biggest rival this year. They controlled the center of the field, allowed only a few shots to get off, and mounted a decent offensive attack. Another point is they were able to score four goals without two of their best players, Shyam Allard and Syami Erving, scoring any. They recorded four goals from four other players, which shows they have the versatility and talent to get a good contribution from anyone on any given night. It also shows they are capable of knocking the ball around and playing team soccer.
Brazilian Thakura G. appears to be a fine skillful addition to the team. He distributed the ball well from his forward slot yesterday and had several shots on goal, including one that made it into the net. Both Joey O'Brien and Josh DeGrove are capable goal scorers at forward as well, so there is little if any dropoff regarding subs from the forward spot.
At outside midfield Junior Quentin Polly appears to be very improved. A player with good skills, he has become faster and more confident over the summer and that has translated into some early assists and goals. On the other side of the field, sophmore Naveen Allin lends his left foot to the left mid position. He is one of the fastest guys on the team and can cross the ball well. He generally puts himself in good position to finish and create goals. He hasn't connected on any yet this year but he has come close. In time, I'm sure his talent will produce results. Coming off the bench on the outside is Adam Palpant, a former GSA club player, and capable of producing results as well. He is also fleet of foot.
Senior center-mids and co-captains Shyam and Syami are both All-State players from last year and they anchor and generally control the middle of the field. When one of them goes out there is an obvious drop-off in the overall team play. But they are capable of logging many minutes due to their years of experience and conditioning with Basil's Leg-a-z club team.
The defense has been strong so far in the early going. Starters are Mathura Rico, probably the most intense player on the team, co-captain Austin Bishop, whose calm demeanor and big frame is suited well for center defense, DiDi Knighten, another big strong kid with good speed, and Nitai Diniz, the senior fullback who combines good skills, physical play and enthusiasm. Sophmore Dakota backs up the defense and has the potential to contribute as the season goes on.
Two very good bench players, who are capable of starting are the mystical identical twins Krishna and Balarama Rodriquez. These guys are quite capable at fullback and outside mid and are pretty much interchangable. They both are quite skillful and are capable of starting.
Caintanya Jansen is the staring goalie. Reserved and shy, I've seen this kid make amazing saves. He has not been so tested so far this year but I'm sure he will be okay as he becomes more confident and used to playing varsity.
Reserve sophmore John Anderson is a nice kid who doesn't get to play very much. He also has good potential and has recorded one goal and one assist this year. Senior Alex Wigglesworth is another reserve who is capable of playing forward or outside mid and is quite capable of putting the ball in the back of the net. His teammates agree, he has the coolest last name on the team. Collin will be joining the team now that football season is over. He's a good athelete who led JV is scoring last year and scored 6 goals in a game.
Tuesday night at home they will get a glimpse of Middleburg and get an idea what they bring to the table this year. One of their best players from last year, Michael Bross, graduated. It will be interesting to see how they cope without him, if they are going to be a factor this year, or if they will turn out to be in rebuilding mode.
Suwannee lost to Oak Hall by a score of 5-0 a few nights ago. They come into Santa Fe on November 19th. The game was close after one half but Oak Hall blew it open in the 2nd. The Raiders beat them twice last year and hope to continue the tradition.
Coach Nick Miller has prepared the team well by mixing in a balanced regimen of drills, scrimmages and conditioning. He has also stocked the team with a deep bench. Ridgeview appeared worn out in the second half compared to the Raiders. Coach Miller got his first yellow card this year after complaining to referee Randy Stoudt about a non-call after Naveen Allin was obviously taken down in the box. It was also his first yellow card in his career as coach of the Raiders as he maintained his cool all of last year. In a humurous twist of role reversal, Joey O'Brien, who generally wears his emotions on his sleeve, was seen "containing" and "calming" the coach on the sidelines, getting between him and the referee after the yellow was issued.
Santa Fe is still working on getting more games. Their current schedule will be posted here soon.

Santa Fe 4
Middleburg 3
Thakura Borrero and Joey O'Brien both had two goals. Shyam Allard and Naveen Allin both had two assists. Santa Fe went down 3-2 after the first half due to defensive mistakes and poor goal keeping decisions. They dominated control of the ball in the second half and got away with the 4-3 victory. Without the mistakes they would have won by more, as they possessed the ball much more than Middleburg. Middleburg hung in there and fought hard with opportune scrappiness. Syami Erving was removed from the game after getting two yellows. More later.

The boys spent practice on Wednesday watching film of their close victory over Middleburg. In the first half they controlled a majority of the possession but still let up 3 goals and trailed at the half 3-2. The boys made some mistakes on the defensive side of the ball and the goalie Chay Jansen made some poor decisions which led to Middleburg's goals. Another problem the boys had in the first half were careless turnovers that led to the goals. Right back Mathura Rico was removed from the game by Coach Nick Miller late in the first half for disciplinary reasons. Nick also got a yellow himself when protesting a non-call. Early in the second half, Syami Erving received a yellow and red from the same referee for talking and had to leave the game. He will not be available for the next two games. Joey O'Brien missed a few shots in front of the goal early but was still able to put one in off a hard on frame by left winger Naveen Allin that bounced right to him. Naveen also saved a ball and made a nice pass to Thakura Gobrerro who finished well. Before geting ejected Syami Erving played unevenly due to illness but got himself in position for two close goal scoring opportunities that the keeper came down with.
In the second half the team played much better despite missing the services of Rico and erving. Thakura Borrero kept up his high energy and Shyam Allard controlled the middle of the field with his high skill acumen. Both Thakura and Joey O'Brien scored goals set up by Shyam and Middleburg barely got any chances to possess the ball for very long. One of the keys of the second half was a big cut down in the number of turnovers committed. Allard also recorded seven steals on the night and along with Thakura, put on a dazzling display of footwork which wowed the large home crowd. The 4-3 victory gives the Raiders a 3-0-0 record in the young season.
On that note, Santa Fe has become more and more a great place to watch a home game with some of the largest crowds in the area, a half time raffle and a brimming concession stand. The crowd is often filled with musical instruments, including large drums and the chant of "Ole Ole" throughout the games.
Santa Fe also represents much cultural diversity with three players from Columbia, two from Brazil, one part English, one part Native American, three African Americans, and two part East Indian. Ten of the players are Hare Krishna devotees and are thus strict vegetarians from birth.
The next contest is at home vs. Suwannee on Monday. November 20th.
