    College coach as club coach

Is it permissible for a club coach to suggest to one of his club players that they apply/try out for his particular college? More importantly, does it ever happen?

Yes and yes. Why wouldn’t it happen? Not sure about the “apply/try out” wording, most here in the US call it recruiting.

The ncaa enforces a 50 mile rule to try and keep things under control. A college coach may not coach a player in club whose home is more than 50 miles from the college campus.

That seems to fly in the face of MD coaching at FSA doesnt it?

Why? FSA is close to Central and most the players are from that area.

Which is a rule I've never understood. Shouldn't it be WITHIN 50 miles? What's the logic?

It’s intended to allow college coaches to coach local club teams, and not use their club teams as a subterfuge for nationwide recruiting. There’s generally not enough talent within fifty miles from which a coach can pull enough kids who are both good enough and interested.

Why should a coach have to coach a club team 50 miles away from where he lives

You need to get out of CT. In many states, 50 miles is almost a drive to the grocery store.

If you have to drive 50 miles to the grocery store you are already growing your own food
                          You are a farmer

In many states ? West Texas and Alaska maybe

It is within 50 miles. But 50 miles in San Diego or Dallas is certainly different than 50 miles in WV or CT. Big advantage for those in highly populated areas.

50 miles is nothing in many areas, even the densely populated NE. It is also nothing to the dedicated/possibly lunatic soccer parent either. Kids from CT drive the Foxboro and that's close to 100 miles one way from Hartford.
