Any player that approaches a referee like the swarm of players that did should be red carded instantly. Throw all of them out of the game. That stuff cannot be tolerated. It is not in other sports.
Teams should have 3 challenges, like in football, to have plays reviewed via video. Lose a challenge if the challenge is unsuccessful after review. That would eliminate flops, unsportsmanlike fouls, shirt pulling, and intentional fouls.
Has to be a hard limit on yellow cards and team fouls so that doesn't become a strategy to win a game.

Meant FIFA not USSF.

MOSCOW (AP) - Eight yellow cards. A head-butt. Yelling players surrounding the referee. Gamesmanship and spikiness across the pitch. Decided on a penalty shoot-out, the World Cup drama of England vs. Colombia would have been better without the ugliness. Among those who thought so: Colombia coach Jose Pekerman. "When there are so, so many fouls and interruptions I think that's not good," he said. "We shouldn't only look at Colombian players. We should also look at England players." Struggling at times to keep control of the game, American referee Mark Geiger dished out six yellow cards to Colombian players.
Yellow and red cards were introduced as a result of what happened during the 1970 FIFA World Cup™ in Mexico, and have since become part and parcel of the game.
It's time to strengthen the rules to curb cheap and dirty play in the form of intentional fouls, a high number of team fouls, more than 2 yellow cards in a game, and flopping. This is a professional referee, and if professionals can't even control a game, USSF has to look at what it's doing to the integrity of the game.

Countries should start pulling out of FIFA and force a new federation with checks and balances. You make a great point. How is anything going to be solved if we can't rely on the current governing body?

Go watch lower league play anywhere in the world and this is week in and week out stuff
The answer is not always about pulling out (unless you’re 18 or younger)

I grew up with the game, and I think this sort of stuff is ruining the sport. We need another Ken Aston.

This is the fault of the helicopter parents and we now see the results of their parenting style as their progeny overreact to everything.
I think the focus on 1 or 2 serious whiners have highlighted what has gone on for years.
It is also much more prevalent in the continental Europe and South American countries.
We even see this in the NBA. It is the new generation

This generation of helicopter parents are the worst, trying to live vicariously through their children and taking any means to ensure their kids' success. They think they are helping but are really not.
The Laws of the Game (LOTG) are the codified rules that help define association football. They are the only rules of association football subscribed to by FIFA. During a match, it is the task of the referee to interpret and enforce the Laws of the Game. Some are unable to do this. The game should be about soccer skill, not all of the garbage we are watching.
- intentional tactical fouls (diffuses counterattacks, which provide the most exciting parts of a game). What good does a direct kick on your own half of the field? For taking away an advantage play, the loss has to be restored with an automatic yellow.
- Defenders shirt pulling, pushing off with the arm, trips, hard fouling is to their advantage. Forwards so much as touch a defender or goalie, it is called. Time to call it both ways. Scoring is good for the game.
- Flopping or gamesmanship - Some players fall like they were literally shot in the back by a rifle. Video, in many instances, shows there was absolutely no contact. They roll over 5 times and grimace in apparent pain that does not exist. Two minutes later, they get up, and start running without even as much as a hesitation or limp. Trying to fool a referee should be an automatic ejection, no yellow, no warning. It's cheating.
- Referees are attacked now by mobs of players, who are getting up in their faces and showing complete disrespect. Surrounding, threatening or talking back to a referee should be automatic fines and red cards. Believe me, it will stop very quickly.
Start fining and throwing these guys out of games, having teams play men down where it truly impacts an outcome, and integrity of the game will be restored.
