can someone explain the alphabet of leagues please

Collection of letters for the wheel of fortune-

What is the difference between girls EDP (national league division 2)vs Northeast NPL and vs NPL 1st division north. This is so confusing.

USSF is the parent organization for all soccer in the US.

The DA programs, boys DA and girls DA (nicknamed GDA), are run directly by USSF and is meant to be the destination for players with national team talent and aspirations.

Underneath that there are US Club Soccer and US Youth (USYSA) soccer which are effectively competitors with each other. There are a couple of other groups at this level too such as AYSO but for what you are trying to find out, you only care about the first two.

USYSA has a very top to bottom structure. National League>National League Conference>State League>Local League> Intramural. There is a very recent wild card thrown into this as EDP is going to be allowed to run it's own regional premier league at the same time it's running four of the National League Conferences. All of the leagues are based on team merits except for a club based league that clubs can optionally enter at the National League Conference level.

US Club is the wild west. They will sanction leagues of any size and any level that directly compete with each other in the same regions. They are making some attempts at fixing that by creating ENPL (a national based league) with NPL and ECNL directly under that. Several NPL and ECNL leagues overlap each other and compete for teams. Metro is also club based but is not really part of the ENPL/NPL/ECNL pyramid. In NY/LI you then have NYPL which is a team based regional premier league and then NYCSL which is local travel.

    It's a mess.

        Depending on who you ask:

        GDA
        ECNL
        USYS NL

        Thanks!

Rating the leagues is a dicey proposition. A league may include a strong club with good teams and good instruction and also a very weak club. Look at the clubs and teams near enough to your player to consider and within your budget. Choose the best fit and then okay in that league.

It's probably best to put them in tiers:

GDA and ECNL are the top of the Girls. There are numerous threads debating both -- they each have their place.

Then, below that, you have NPL and now EDP's National League battling for regional play that leads to national championships.

Look at clubs and coaches specific to your age group.

Always look for the best coaching and fit for your player. Don't get too caught up in the leagues, especially with players U12-13 or younger. Too much travel for younger ones is a recipe for burnout.

Too many put way too much stock into ranking leagues. Instead you should concentrate on finding a team at your kids level with a coach that you think will do a good job.

Where I live my kid in the fall can play in NYCSL, NYPL, METRO, NPL, LIJSL, ENYPL, National League Conference, National League, EDP, ECNL, ENPL, DA, Super-Y, USSSF, AYSO, SSI Interleague, LIJSL Interleague and Intramurals. And I'm sure I'm missing a few.

When you factor in competitive level, budget, desired travel burden, etc. the list gets smaller.

Whoops, meant to say USSSA soccer, not USSSF. But you get my point.

Good point but several teams ( well known programs) are selling their non DA. Or ECNL in these leagues but these teams are not competing in the same leagues so tryouts it to get a feel as to the pecking order of the level.

Meant to say trying not tryouts. Sorry for the typo.

I feel like EDP is turning USYS into the wild, wild west! Suddenly almost every team out there is playing in the National League, and if not they just create a new conference-club v club, U16 DA rejects, etc
I prefer the old system, top to bottom structure clear definition of what's what. This just feels like a mess...

It's a huge mess! There should be a clear and easily understand pyramid. Instead it's a hodge podge, and extremely difficult to navigate.
