Athletes should do it because coaches need to know for certain you're committed AND accepted (at many schools just having a coach backing you isn't enough to get through the admissions process). If you apply ED or even EA (still early but non binding) and get rejected a coach still can fill your spot.

If the Early Decision included the financial package or Bright Futures expected money then it doesn’t discriminate. Sure top students like to weigh the ten different College offers and money and announce their choice on May 1st but that is blocking many other qualified students from getting admitted to top Florida colleges.

We have Florida’s top students against the world’s top students vying to get a freshmen seat at UF. Most frosh have enough credits to be sophomores when they arrive in the fall and then the junior college students who showed promise transfer in to UF and intermingle. This rejuvenates and balances out the student life.

The perfect freshmen students, test takers, and community leaders have to find a way to intermingle in the library stacks.

Some even give out free applications to top students like candy. If it's practically no cost to you and it's easy with the Common App, why not? May as well see what you can get.
