WUP put more teams into the NEP NPL finals than any other club, and won two NPL age groups, matching CFC for best (MPS got one, Aztecs 1, NEFC none). Those teams were sliced and diced by calendar age, giving the club a chance to put together groups of players from different teams on the W and P side of the club as well as experimenting with calendar age groups. And WUP did win a state cup for the first time in several years, for the U19s. One of the clear objectives of the two merging boards was to make Western MA relevant again at the state level, which hopefully will bear more fruit in coming years.

It is true that WUP did not apply high pressure on teams to sort players. But who really wanted them to? Almost certainly not most of the the families that were well settled onto teams, many of those only able to play within a particular commuting distance. I think it has become easier for players to move between teams than before, and easier to sort players more quickly than the traditional gradual adjustments by stronger players changing teams over a few years. The real proof will be in the youngest teams and over a period of a few years; but who doesn't agree that it is a plus for the region if they succeed ?

Looks like a club administrator made his/her way here... everyone knows (and wishes) Western stayed put.

I feel bad that a club administrator for WUP actually takes time to troll TS to post replies. They should spend more time ensuring quality in their club and coaches

Obviously a Stars west groupie- why are you on this site at all you discredit your club by posting such neg. post. Has not been done to your notorious leader- where it could be open hunting season. Grow up.

WUP parent... making NEP playoffs isn't that impressive. U14G only had 1 play in to get to state cup then lost every game. It is misleading.

                WMass soccer landscape

WUP is not getting it done. All the other upstart clubs are pecking away and the WMass soccer landscape is spreading wider. There are a few clubs making progress and inroads, and they are growing. It is not important to name them because it would be a troll like post if they were named. But soccer is spread wide in WMass. What this means is that the talent will be watered down, but the overall development will be on the increase. Let me be the first to confirm the Pioneers/Western United merger to be a failure, R.I.P.

I don't get why anyone who cares about their child having an opportunity play soccer, would be smacking their teeth at the prospect of a club not succeeding. I hope all the clubs in Western MA do well. Unfortunately, one of the realities is that too many clubs means dilution of the talent pool. Given the limited population, it would be far better if there were a more cooperative environment here in Western MA. It is too bad the environment is so parasitical.

This can't happen because of the "soccer landscape". Look at where to top teams are located. They are all in central MA...Stars, Scorps/Breakers, NEFC, Revs, Bolts. This is only getting more pronounced.

WM clubs, if managed correctly, could build strong teams in the younger age groups if they consolidated talent, but the top players will eventually move to a centralized team. Its just how the landscape has been set up, and its not just here in MA.

The idea sounds great in theory, and we could all put together an all star dream team for each age group if we included players from all clubs in wm, but that's what it is...a dream.

Ryan Lavner doing the same at stars west- all you need is own a ball to have a chance at the infamous ECNL through him.

It does look like WUP lost 2-3 good teams on the boys side and will be weaker. Does anyone know about the girls side?
