I'm sure all the other sports would like to spread their schedules out too. That's why this won't pass. Accommodate one and you have to accommodate all.

These are pretty broad conclusions on your part, but not real facts or arguments offered to substantiate them.

Too many games crammed into such a short season now.

As a former college athlete, I really like this proposal. Currently, soccer's regular season is only 72-days. Basketball is A LOT longer than that. Basketball starts practice at end of Sept, first games in November, then postseason in March.
During the fall season, there is hardly any time for actual practices once the season starts. You have games Thursday/Sunday. So Monday is a recovery day, Tuesday is regular practice/game prep, Weds is a travel day, Thursday game, Friday recovery, Saturday game prep, Sunday game.
Also, when Thursday games are away, that is a lot of school to miss. Spreading out over Fall and Spring eliminates the Thursday games.
The only downside for athletes I see are that you will use fewer players on game day since there will be adequate rest. Co-ops and travel abroad will also be affected but maybe there will be some creative solutions for that?

Hockey has an insane number of games, often back to back. Give it to one sport and you open up the door to having to do it for all. In this day and age with schools under pressure to not raise tuition 5%+ a year, some even considering cutting some athletic teams, the last thing collegiate sports needs is longer seasons.
