Would it be better to be a top player on NPL or bottom on ECNL?

    #2
Please clarify: Northeast NPL or New England NPL.
Top Player in New England NPL is likely a starter, but not "the best" player on ECNL.

As to the what's better answer. Depends on your college goal
D1 - go ECNL for exposure
D3 - Go NPL for more playing time and stats

This completely depends on the team. My daughter played an extra year of NPL because they weren't sure she was ready for ECNL and it was the best team she's ever played on. Better than the ECNL team that year (just because of how kids developed or didn't over the summer, great new players, motivating coach). The girls were also much more of a group and less witchy than the ECNL team.

So, you need to see who's on what team and who's the coach. Also, what age level? Younger? Go for NPL and get a ton of playing time. Older and looking at colleges go for ECNL as coaches play players more evenly in college showcases regardless as playing time during regular season.

Also, is your kid the kind that develops more if they are playing with better players or getting more game time?

Look at commit lists and leagues they played and make your own conclusions. Some folks are delusional.

That's only part of the picture. Overall yes ECNL has better placements than NPL. It absolutely hs better competition to better prepare you for college. But what are the player's goals? Higher level D1? then ECNL. Pretty low D1 and D3? NPL is probably sufficient. Either way, who the coach is, as well as the quality of the club and teammates matter a great deal. Not all ECNL clubs are good, some NPL clubs are good.

Ecnl and top Npl teams are both committing to the same caliber schools.

It depends on the club. NPL is the top team at SSS. So, if you are close to SSS, and like their program, go with SSS. If you aren’t or don’t, then I’d look for ECNL.

No they're not. By and large NPL commits are weaker than ECNL. It's now the #3 league, getting less and less attention from coaches as the top two leagues take up much of their time. Some NPL clubs and teams are still quite good, but much of the better talent moved into ECNL and GDA.

Commit list shows really no edge given to any league.

Actually as a whole ,the commit list is mediocre at best for the number of kids playing.

Because soccer in the northeast is pretty lackluster compared to the national stage. The top programs and NT take players from CA, TX, FL. The NE also doesn't have any real powerhouse college programs. Add to it most students want to go to school within a half days' drive from home and this region from MA to VA has countless excellent academic schools. School is really what most care about anyway.

Good luck finding a NPL list.
