The foreigners who play college soccer here will go back to play for their home country.

      - professional clubs in the top 200 major metro markets, not 35, that can afford to run programs
      - a unified pyramid system with promotion/relegation not leagues A-M
      - smaller geography/less travel
      - affordable soccer that doesn't shut kids out
      - ability for clubs to profit from developing players

Let me know when you can make that happen. Until then Germany can continue to kick azz because they have all of that. So does pretty much all of Europe, Central and South America and increasingly Asia.
Maybe if we developed our own out of a sense of nationalism, instead of Latin/South Americas rejects via some misguided globalist model, we would have a genuine and durable soccer culture here. Maybe this is what the rest of the world figured out long ago. Maybe this is a way to start correcting all the other structural defects you outline, which I agree with...

The globalism is only one way. As it tends to be.
Rest of the world can use American resources.
Americans have no access to the rest of the world's resources.
Its called Socialism 101. We are too strong in general, the rest of the world wants some ...

We are sick of it, time for some pay back.
Get rid of the rainbow warriors in US Soccer.
This is the only way to fix the problem, start at the top, then work way up from the grass roots via nationalism.

Most Americans don't care about soccer. They've grown up rooting for football, basketball and baseball teams. Many never played it except maybe in gym class. As the sport gains in popularity and more kids play that is slowly changing, but it will take a very long time to build a culture even close to the other three sports. College coaches and professional teams are in it to win it - winning means they keep their jobs, puts butts in seats, sells swag, brings in ad dollars and sponsorships. If international players are better than US players then they will be selected because it helps them accomplish those goals. It isn't their job to master societal changes.

Because they're not good enough to play there. Pretty simple.

No, without immigrants you would just have football, baseball, and basketball in this country. The best U.S. Players grew up overseas and they are better because they have been exposed to better players overseas. Bottom line is that soccer is an international sport. If you want to be the best in the world, you have to play the best in the world. We have to develop a soccer culture in this country and foreign players help us do that. Sorry, but globalism is inherent in the sport. Trumptard.

Good point. Master societal changes to develop Master players would require a complete overhaul of America's youth soccer, more on the competitive side. There is the elite talent in America but it has to be identified and developed very early in regional/residential academies where school classes are incorporated with the soccer development. All the other youth local recreational and competitive programs need to stay more local and affordable.

Please wake up. Time to stop being losers. American exceptionalism! If we can be the first to put a man on the moon we can come to dominate world soccer. You people have to stop being so dumb first. Love it or leave it!

I can understand professional clubs bringing in foreigners, but I think colleges are doing a disservice to the American player. The only reason college coaches bring in foreign players is because their counterparts are doing it and they feel the need to compete. But if this was not allowed or limited then they would be on even ground again. College soccer is not a pathway to the pros for the most part and should be viewed as an extracurricular for the students that are already wanting to go there not kids imported in.

They're doing it to help keep their jobs. Coaches recruit players they think will help them WIN.

Yes but as the prior poster said if no colleges could do it then there would not be the need to one up the other with foreign studs.

Good luck telling universities and coaches what to do, especially private ones.

Germany, Italy, Brazil, in fact FIFA itself have no problem legislating nationalism within their soccer infrastructures. We unable to because here, the sport is (as is academia) dominated by globalists not nationalists. And we can see (rather, smell) the results year after year.
