Thorns Subsidizing Players- But no other clubs!

Thorns just dropped $100k to fly 4 teams to Nor Cal this weekend for games, in November spent same amount for three teams to attend a Florida college showcase, and again will drop about $130k + for a North Carolina college showcase in April. Oregon is do Lucky to have an NWCL club investing in our female youth.

How much money has your club spent/invested in your daugher’s development this past year?
Time to start asking the question. These clubs pose as “non-profits” because they run Rec sides with volunteer coaches, but then gain significant profits, bulk of the income, on the competitive side with paid coaches and overpaid DOC’s while still benefitting from non-profit corporation tax exemptions. What are your clubs doing to give back to the community?

Let's talk about the fact that you spent that much money on flights time and expense to play wasteful games. Some of the thorns teams would struggle playing in state teams and all wouldn't be top 3 in Washington.

You wasted all that time and expense when you could have played a team 10 minutes away and may not be successful.

It's everything wrong with youth soccer. The cost even if not all paid for by those kids reflects he sheer stupidity for the sake of what might appear cool.

    It's a shame.

North of 10% of revenue given in scholarships by our 501(c)(3) club.

If there is money on the table, Timbers will grab it, but not before giving back a few dollars for the photo op.

Get off the sauce Timbers lackey/gm/owner.

All 25 or whatever that signed up for each Thorns team don't travel. Thorns can only play 16 players max per game so travel isn't as expensive when you only have to take 16 out of 25 to away games. The U17s only used 14 total in their CA game and the 3 subs only got a few minutes. Thorns are very generous to subsidize the cost but cost per minute played is quite high for many in the academy. Thorns values training time over game time though so they are probably making up the minutes with extra training. The GDA says Development is more important than winning but they flew players to CA but didn't even use the few subs they are allowed in order to get a tie. Looks like its actually winning over development after all. I'm glad. I think winning matters big time.

None, and usually it’s 17 or 18 Per age group

Every club in Oregon is paying to fly these teams because the Timbers are ripping off youth soccer to subsidize their DA program. Stop pretending this is being done out of the goodness of Gavin and Merritt’s heart.

Also don’t get used to it. The Timbers have been actively shopping the GDA because they have never been committed to girls soccer and because it is as DOA as the NWSL.

While it is certainly true that all the OYSA/RTC/ODP etc players are the ones actually subsidizing the Thorns Academy, the Timbers org could still be pulling in all that extra money from all of us and then NOT subsidize the Thorns Academy. The Thorns players are mostly wealthy families who would willingly pay as much or more than ECNL prices to wear the GDA patch. I don't think Thorns Academy is perfect but the fact that it is subsidized is very nice and should be commended. On the other hand, you can't blame regular clubs for not subsidizing entire teams. Regular clubs fundraise and subsidize financially needy individual players. That is way more appropriate than a local club subsidizing their entire A-teams (including all the wealthy players) at the expense of their B & C teams and the needy.

Timbers have been subsizing on the boys side for ten years and no one has ever complained. Boys only pay $500, girls pay $2,000. We should all be rallying behind these girls and fighting for better subsidizing, not less.

I thought only the 2 older age groups had there travel subsidized. The younger groups pay the full price.

OYSA contract changed that all - clubs get tired of paying Timbers for leagues and cups and watch Timbers' use Thorns Academy as public relations.

Would also say watching the poor pay of women pros demise of NWSL teams - Breakers and FC Kansas City - doesn't put this in the best light. If there is so much money sloshing around Providence Park, they consider propping up their league and paying a living wage.

The Timbers subsidize because that is an MLS mandate.

Most NWSL teams are barely in business so I doubt that the NWLS will mandate the clubs to have a subsidized academy team.

What is up with the entitlement and free lunch mentality. If you expect quality then expect to pay for it. It is a bonus if you get something for free or discounted, but don't expect it.

Your argument for inequity implies that you think only wealthy kids should be able to play soccer at high levels.
