Philosophically, I've always been an "adapt your system to fit your players" type of guy. We seem to stick to the system even if we don't have the tools (players) to execute it.

The problem with playing a possession-based system as a national team is that you have a group of players who are together only in fits and starts. It isn't plug-and-play, so to speak. While clubs can build a team over a period of years, selecting personnel and developing a style of play in training, with a national team you don't have that flexibility. You have limited time in training, and are stuck with a player pool.
I'd love for the USMNT to play a possession-based style, but it just isn't realistic.
The likes of Spain (in their World Cup winning heyday) could play an attacking, possession-based system because their squad had either been brought up playing in the system, or otherwise had the technical ability and tactical understanding necessary to play it.
The US doesn't have either. There's no (1) built-in philosophy of positional play, instilled in youth teams starting at the grassroots level, much less (2) a pool of players who can execute this style of play at the international level.
You can't just flip a switch. Even if we could sort out the defense and midfield for such a system (one year in, that's looking unlikely), even the best teams in the world at playing this style struggle to break down a determined, compact defense (see Barcelona as of late, especially when Messi is unavailable).

Are there any youth clubs that preach that style of play? Back when Eugene P. was director at Pac, I recall footwork and possession being their motto. My kid hasn't been there for a few years and the current club is a boot and chase it club (didn't know that when we signed up).

PacNW is the only club that seeks to implement it from top to bottom, as a club-wide philosophy, that I'm aware of.

Fix coaches education, if the people teaching the topics are morons then they will produce the same product = morons. It's not rocket science. Choose any example country you like and look at the number of A-License coaches available as well as the relevant costs involved in obtaining it. You talk about the issue with 'Pay to play' being a barrier, the true hurdle is the USSF themselves and their 'Pay to educate' model that simply does not work and prevents good people from being properly licensed.

Oh dear .... where do we begin ? Pay to play ? Paid coaches who’s only knowledge of the beautiful game to to put a pass and move drill together ? Drills ? The players become robotic and have close to no individual brilliance (just look at the sounders ) the age change ? Why change something that is in line with the school year (idiotic at best ) and many many other issues .
