    NLI question

Quick question. NCAA website says NLI is contract between school and player for ONE year. Does that mean same amount of original scholarship amount money isn't guaranteed for the entire 4 years? How would you plan for school tuition if it isn't? In practice does it usually stay the same for all 4 years?

Athletic scholarships are only guaranteed for 4 years in the Power 5 conferences and a few other limited instances (mostly just top football and basketball players). In theory your deal is at risk each and every year. As long as your athlete is delivering on a coach's expectations it should be fine. But yeah anything can happen - coaches can even give more the next year if you're over delivering. If the athletic $ is the only way you can afford that school you might want to reconsider or have a backup plan. I know everyone loves the idea of an athletic scholarship, but if your kid is smart and can get a good merit scholarship instead? Take it and run. As long as you keep up your GPA merit is usually guaranteed all 4 years.

Two things. 1) All schools can now give 4 year scholarships so it is certainly within your right to ask for it. 2) Even the one years automatically renew unless a kid is academically ineligible, a disciplinary problem or doesn’t meet team rules (constantly late...etc). Short of that, they can’t take it away. If they try, the student can appeal and will nearly always win the appeal.

^ not true. Outside of the Power 5 coaches still have the ability to cut $ if they want. The rare 4 year deals outside the Power 5 are rarely for a non revenue sport like soccer. Like another poster said if the athlete performs it's pretty much an automatic renewal. But why should a coach have to keep paying for an under performer? And if you quit - even if ythe coach sucks - yes you lose your $

http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes...e/scholarships "If a school plans to reduce or not renew a student-athlete’s aid, the school must notify the student-athlete in writing by July 1 and provide an opportunity to appeal. In most cases, coaches decide who receives a scholarship, the scholarship amount and whether it will be renewed."

Correct if they quit but that’s fairly obvious. Now look up how many win on appeal. Please stop feeding this false narrative. Unless you do something stupid, they cannot reduce the money or take it away. You are doing people a disservice. I called the NCAA and their exact words were that scholarships cannot be reduced or removed based on athletic ability. Only discipline, academics or quitting are reasons. If a coach tries to remove it in any part for athletic reasons, you will win the appeal. Translation. Show up on time, do well in the classroom, stay out of trouble and make a good effort and you will keep your money. Playing time is a different story.

Based on what you’re saying, you don’t even have to “make a good effort” and the money is safe.

Not the op but pretty much. So all a coach has to do is bench you and make your life miserable so that you either quit or transfer out. So, basically you still lose your scholarship.

coaches do try and do that, most of the time its cause they missed (saw something that wasnt really there)
they cant really make your life more miserable than any other players- because then you can appeal on that-but you will get watched for the slightest screw up
