Just jumping in this discussion thread for one comment here. Take a look at OYSA or US Soccer or ECNL game reports, they are easily posted and reviewed. Hellllo?! It takes simple second grade adding math to see just how many more yellow cards and red cards referees give boys vs girls. It is really awful that with the obvious facts out in the open this discrepancy is not being addressed head on (pardon the pun) by all the leagues with their referee associations. This should be a MAJOR topic of conversation and change in youth soccer and instead year after year, hesitant referees with the whistles in their mouths don’t blow when looking at a girl. Referee training, standards and expectations have to change for female player safety. This must come from league demands and US Soccer leadership. Stop ignoring if you read this and you are in charge of a team or a league, DO SOMETHING to make real change here.

Obviously, we need to pay referees more.

Apples to apples here. Unless you are saying referees of female games are paid less? Assuming they are not in youth leagues, the problem exists with referees training and helping to train away the obvious bias against blowing the whistle on female players that clearly exists.
