I can give you the real problem with our soccer system. From the roots, our sytem is corrupted. At young ages all the kids are just going to play for their local club, no real problem there. Then, you get to the real problem. At age 11 or 12, you can break up these kids into two groups; the talented and the athletic (strong, fast) kids. Naturally these kids tryout for the DA team for their area. This is where the stronger faster kids are taken and the natural/raw talent is put to the side. The DA develops these stronger players and gives them ball skills, more strength, soccer IQ, etc. This is where our sytem is flawed. We have no clue what makes a good soccer player. Im not talking MLS, im talking good european soccer player. RAW TALENT is what makes every great European footballer. Europe is so much more advanced at this game than us because we have no talent identification nor talent development sytem in this country. We have to have a system that can identify talent, and develop it. If we keep kidding ourselves with this DA system we will eventually be the next San Marino. European footballers are made by talent and devlopment, and this is what we must learn to start giving a name for our national teams. For all the DA enthusiasts out there, lemme tell you something. Since the implementation of this DA system, we have had less recruits go off to Europe, and our national team has sucked even more. And the worst part is, thats just the beggining of the pain that is going to keep coming as a result of this flawed system. Dont tell me DA will make our national team better, because at the moment where worse than we where before DA came into play.

For the talented kids here in the US who really have a passion for the game its difficult because there is not alot of places to just go play whenever wherever. I think thats a big reason why our country is not up to European and South American standards.

You can learn a lot watching games.

The sport is what it is.
The US offers far too many other athletic options with more prestige in the US. Soccer really does not stand a chance to be anymore then what it is. DA, High School system, ODA...none of that changes the fact that the best potential players are busy with other sports.

On top of that, let's go beyond just the NFL and NBA...how about the 100's of thousands of kids who play these sports and are great athletes, but don't have the size required for the next level in those sports?
Those are the players you are missing out on...the undersize great athletes that wanted to be an NFL or NBA player since they were small children, but never grew into the body for the sport beyond the high school or even college level.

We have thousands of future Lozanos or Guardados playing youth soccer today. The problem is what happens to them, not that elite athletes like Barry Sanders become running backs and not an attacking midfielders.
