Geoff Cameron has a few things to say

Long NY Times piece today about Geoff Cameron. A few highlights

“There’s no doubt in my mind that if Jurgen Klinsmann was still our head coach, we would have qualified for the World Cup.”

Bruce Arena made decisions that cost us going to the World Cup. And I don’t have a problem saying it, because we had the right group of guys.”

A decade ago, during the 2007-8 season, 12 Americans played at least one game in the Premier League. This season, only four Americans are on league rosters and just three have made it onto the field: Cameron; Newcastle’s DeAndre Yedlin; and Huddersfield’s Danny Williams.

That last one is telling - ten years of DA and we have fewer EPL players than ten years ago. Numerous mentions about those who have since retired to the MLS, where rickety old soccer players come for a few more paychecks.

sounds like he's just pissed that he lost favor with Arena. There will be criticism from all angles on why we didn't qualify. 6 and half a dozen. We need to move on and look forward. Feb 10 will be an important day.

Agreed on the DA. Not much to show for it. All the chatter/propaganda on the girls threads is hilarious.

And the MLS is horrible, horrible product. It is only slightly above town rec.

          yeah, DA has really produced.

right- anyone can pick one year in time to make their case. Look at it in bulk. I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

So looking at the current season is cherry picking? Really?

Just looking at the Premiership in England is myopic. There are 69 Yanks in Europe and here is their story:

To make a relevant comparison please tell us how many yanks were playing abroad ten years ago. It probably was about the same as now. If DA was raising the level of soccer more would be playing abroad and fewer international players would be playing at US schools and in the mls draft

The article still is uncomplimentary of US development as most of the stars over there went over pretty early or are dual citizens. Their point is we have enough over there but the quality is lacking.

Yeah, IMO DA has improved the general quality of US college soccer and perhaps provided a few decent players to the MLS. None of those players will ever see the MNT. As the prior article suggests, you need exceptional athletes to play at the World Cup level. The US has such talent but in most cases their choice of sports is not soccer.

This article was really a jab at Arena - everything else was poorly researched garbage.

Very short sighted comments. Although the premier league is a great league, there are other leagues and many players out there playing. A drop in players in the EPL may reflect other avenues that players are considering. While the MLS is still a second tier league it too is improving. It is quite possible that talented players are looking at their financials which are factually improving in the MLS.

As for the DA, perhaps it is a step in the right direction but not the last step. The league has clearly recognized two facts about youth sports, especially in a country where sports has to compete with already established and very prominent alternatives.
                              1. Money. The less expensive club soccer becomes, the more attractive it will be. The DA clubs....and non-DA clubs....are looking for ways to make this happen. Granted...at the expense of players/families that are willing to pay the full fee.
                              2. Money. MLS salaries are increasing each year and interest (attendance and Media coverage) are increasing. Why go to Europe to make 50-80K pounds when you can stay home and make 125K dollars?
                              3. The DA has realized that two days per week training was worthless. Four (standard)- five days per week with weekend game (s) is moving in the right direction

The next step are residence academies.
                              IMG in Florida
                              Barca in Arizona
                              DC United with Calverton Academy

The direction is positive. To state otherwise is somewhat ignorant.
