If you can't afford to travel to California for a weekend to play 2 soccer games then should you really be playing in this league?
Travel soccer is a luxury item and is not really a necessity. The reality is if you need help and willing to work for it, there is financial assistance. What is the point of subsidizing a team of 18 when half can already pay?
Ask me about education, food, clothing, etc... and my response would be different.
You are talking about travel soccer. $150K per team so that 17 players can go play 30 games. It is a game.

So kids are missing school and flying to California on our dime, to watch their teammates play or if they're lucky, maybe get to actually step on the field for 6 minutes a game. And you think this should be celebrated? I don't know who is more stupid - you or their parents.

.
Yes. This is the point. If you are good enough and have the talent and potential, the opportunities to play at the highest levels should not be dependent on your parent’s income level. ECNL has methodically stomped out soccer athletes that come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds from ever moving upwards because parents could not afford it. Add to this the white wealthy families with inferior athletes fight to maintain the ECNL status quo because it advances opportunities for the lesser players with money.

It is certainly true, that PEREGRINE is actually subsidizing the Thorns Academy.
That's all that can be said on the matter.
The conspiracy theorists (those that preach our local club league fees- actually pay for Thorns DA) also want us to believe, the earth is flat, 911 was an inside Job, Antarctica is home to an alien civilization beneath the ice & the opening to the hollow earth, the Moon landing was fake and the Illuminati run this planet.
Thanks for the levity regarding the Thorns DA funding source.

You want to travel to other states so you can play soccer, but you don't want to pay for it. You want someone else to pay for it.
You don't have to play ECNL or DA to play college soccer.
There are plenty of kids who play ECNL who are not white. Whether they are white, black, brown, yellow, etc... there is a cost to travel. It is not free. Kid's who can't afford it can get assistance. I have yet to see a talented kid from Oregon who got turned away from soccer because they could not afford it. Sure they have to make some sacrifices, but where there is a will there is a way. FC Portland, CU, and Thorns all have scholarships available.

All you have to do to sponsor a kid, is pay their way and don't forgot to pay your own child's way as well. What an Incredible scholarship program, available at both these clubs you mention Worth checking out, for sure!

[QUOTE=Unregistered;2185476]OYSA contract changed that all - clubs get tired of paying Timbers for leagues and cups and watch Timbers' use Thorns Academy as public relations.
OYSA doesn't pay the Timbers anything under their agreement. Nor do any youth clubs in Oregon.

How much money has your club spent/invested in your daugher’s development this past year?
Time to start asking the question. These clubs pose as “non-profits” because they run Rec sides with volunteer coaches, but then gain significant profits, bulk of the income, on the competitive side with paid coaches and overpaid DOC’s while still benefitting from non-profit corporation tax exemptions. What are your clubs doing to give back to the community?

The Thorns players are mostly wealthy families who would willingly pay as much or more than ECNL prices to wear the GDA patch. I don't think Thorns Academy is perfect but the fact that it is subsidized is very nice and should be commended. On the other hand, you can't blame regular clubs for not subsidizing entire teams. Regular clubs fundraise and subsidize financially needy individual players. That is way more appropriate than a local club subsidizing their entire A-teams (including all the wealthy players) at the expense of their B & C teams and the needy.

Clubs were told that starting in the fall payments would be made to OYSA, who would handle league expenses and then settle-up with the Timbers afterwards. We were suppose to get a full accounting of fall revenue and expenses, including what goes to the Timbers, but not sure that has happened yet.
