Conversely, the u19/18 Thorns Academy won big. What this shows us is that other top Oregon u19 would’ve done well vs them too. The advent of GDA & ECNL didn’t change our Oregon talent pool nor did it change our coaching pool. It rearranged the same talent and same coaches we’ve always had. The same thing happened in every other state. NorCal top clubs & players mostly stayed ECNL, with the exception of most top players who played for coach Deza at DeAnza Force ECNL following him to Earthquakes GDA. Sorry but our Oregon girls would be crushed by them no matter which patch we or they are wearing.

Instead of bashing Oregon teams & Oregon girls, we need to be focusing on what needs to change to develop ALL our girls better so they can ALL compete at least a little better against California players. All this petty jealousy and anger simply hurts ALL of our girls. I agree that the ECNL & GDA also need to stop acting so holier than thou as well and understand that their attitude invites the bashing but please rise above. Two wrongs don’t make a right and we desperately need more rights in Oregon soccer for ALL the girls.
Your soapbox lecturing would be more legitimate had it happened when folks were trashing ECNL clubs. Now all of a sudden when the flagship GDA 01/02 team struggles, they are off limits for criticism.

Most players have left, scraping the bottom of the barrel to find players.

It actually solves a problem to have most of the 03’s leave. Next year the 02’s and 03’s combine. Since most of the stronger players on the 01/02 team are 02’s, they will make up the bulk of that 02/03 team, leaving few spots for 03’s. So in spite of it looking like a dumpster fire it’s actually working out well. The 03’s that stick around will be rewarded by getting to play with some of the best 02’s in the nation.

Maybe that’s why they don’t get a lot of quality? Just a thought.

I doubt many 02s stick around.

The strongest players on the 01/02 team are very weak. Not even good enough for OYSA.

If you think the 02s on Thorns are “some of the best 02s in the nation” you are delusional. The 03s left on that team have no field awareness. We watched them get thumped by the second string players and five 04 players they brought up from SJ Quakes. A parent said they played up 04s and all the 03s that came we’re the ones that needed more play time because they hardly ever get to play. There was an 05 national team player also on the roster that day that was running circles around Thorns non-existent midfield and defense. It was painfully obvious there is no real quality on that 03 Thorns roster.

Quakes also played up their two best 03s in the 02 game that day..where Thorns got thumped 7-2. Why would someone say Thorns 02s have top national players?

Thorns academy has really struggled this year. Wonder if s y will stick around for next year?

Thorns 01/02 team might be in the bottom half of the weak GDA division they’re in but they still have some of the best players in the state. Not all but some across all age groups. Same goes for some being spread across ecnl & OYSA teams as well. The Thorns 03s are in a tough spot because that is the age that more of the CA top players went into GDA. Those CA players weren’t in ECNL or high school yet, weren’t in the middle of getting recruited and so more of them went GDA. Same but opposite reason the Thorns u19/18 team is doing better than their 01/02 team. Hardly any top CA u19/18s went GDA. I am surprised that the Thorns 01/02 team lost 7-2 but that means that other Oregon 01/02 teams would’ve lost big too. Thorns 01/02 is known to be better than the 99/00 team. Everything has to be taken in perspective.

Or how about the simple fact that no team from Oregon does well except for 1-2 teams from the past 10 years or so. This is every single team from every club dating back. Just because they have an acronym or pay a lot of money doesn't make them good.

I think some of them are leaving but a few are stuck with no where to go.

That’s my point. Oregon has the same player pool and coaching pool as always. We have the same not as good as many other state’s players. However, the best girls in our own state are spread around GDA & ECNL & OYSA. Wins vs CA teams mean those aren’t the best CA teams. Losses to good CA teams are normal and should be expected. No point in bashing ecnl or GDA or even OYSA for losses to out of state teams. Same goes for wins as far as don’t go puffing up your chest if you beat a CA, WA, etc team. It only means the team you beat isn’t that great. We need to work on improving the average of ALL of our Oregon players and stop bashing or bragging about any particular league.

The bashing and bragging seem like a normal part of the competitive process. Not a lot of altruistic coaches/admins out there that want to do things for the love of "making the average of all players in Oregon better". That's not a terrible thing, but rather a normal competitive thing. And maybe the competition does indirectly make everyome better in the long run?

I'm not disagreeing with you, just providing a different point of view.

Think of the local high school leagues, the MLS,...etc. The goal is to be the best and to win. Not to make everyone else better.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this age group and others once Westside announces it’s takeover of the Thorns DA program.
