Melbourne 3 Viera 2
Melbourne for the first half was the better team. made good passes. both teams played long ball and seemed to have hail mary scoring attempts from end to end. Melbourne scored on a corner, then a second goal on a free kick. In regular play Viera's defense seemed to be able to control Mel's offense.
One of Viera's players got a red card and Viera was playing a man down. Viera took control of both sides of the ball and scored 2 very good goals to tie it up. It seemed Viera had all the momentum and then the coach decided to sub in a JV player as a right wingback, Melbournes top scorer who had been pretty much shut down by Viera's Center back moved over to the side of the field that the JV player went in and within two minutes out paces him and the right back and takes it in for a break away and scores the winning goal. The other mistake the coach made is that Viera was playing a 4 back set while Viera was doing well, then when the score was tied he went to a 3 back set. Melbourne is too strong up top to play a 3 back set with. The coach also let Viera players that were killing the team, stay in when they should have been benched.
Coaches should help their teams win these close games, not do things to help them lose.
Melbourne was the better team. they deserved the win. It was an exciting game. I've never had a bad thing to say about the Coach. I've always thought he was a hands off coach, but help the team out a little.
