    GDA 2018 age brackets

I've heard rumors of U.S. Soccer adding a U13 age bracket for 2018-19. Does anyone have any insight?

Where ya been? That's nothing compared to the rumor of going to single year age groups. If that one is true, the rationalizations defending that move are going to be ****ing hilarious.

When could we expect an official announcement if this is going to happen? This rumor has been around since last winter at least but I haven't seen a credible source yet.

The 16/17 age bracket was always going to be broken up.

"FOR NEW CLUBS: please confirm your club is applying for all Girls' Academy age groups. *
*The Girls’ Development Academy is currently in the first year of the program. Academy Leadership is in the stage of observation and analysis about any potential age groups for expansion, e.g. U-13, U-16 single age, etc. If the Academy were to expand, all clubs that complete this application would also be considered for additional potential age groups and would receive communication prior to confirming participation. Note: Existing Academy Clubs do not need to apply for any potential expansion, they will automatically be considered for any additional age group expansion."

Thanks for this. If u16 goes single year does this mean u17 is also single year? At that point why not just have single year through u19? Breaking teams up at u18 during the recruiting process would be terribly disruptive.

Yes, it would mean separate U16 and U17 brackets.

I could see keeping the combined U18/19 for trapped seniors though.

That is really unfortunate if that's the plan. I was a believer, but this to me says this is about grabbing money rather than developing elite players.

But the demand from the parents is there because it gives their kid more of a chance of making a "top" team, which is all most care about anyway. So no doubt the market will demand it. Then it truly will just be ECNL 2.0 and clear as day that GDA was never about developing better players but solely about wrestling control & $$$$ from ECNL.

They most absolutely do have a clue - it's a BUSINESS. It's about market share and shutting out the competition. More teams=more players and money for DA clubs=less players and money for non DA clubs.

Many knew that already; others are slow to figure it out.

And what was so awesome about the combined age groups? All it would result in is bouncing kids in an out of DA.

If U.S. Soccer expands the number of clubs at U15 on up you would have a point but that is not the case.

Not the good ones, and isn't that the whole point? To get the best? Have you seen the quality of players on the single-year rosters?

The whole point is to challenge players, push them harder, especially the top ones. USSF or clubs don't care about the younger ones that are jettisoned. They weren't going to make it anyway. People always need to remember that DA and clubs only care about small subset of players. The rest help pay the bills and provide practice cones for the chosen ones. It feels pretty shi**y to those cut but this is supposed to be about finding the best talent and developing it, not singing Kumbaya around a campfire
