Yes to this statement - this is what club sports are all about. This is why you see so many unhappy parents on the sidelines and unhappy kids walking to cars after games. It's a team sport so you can't control what you really want which is the individual accomplishment of a single player. It's why parents hate coaches, its why teams don't come together to play good soccer because they are playing for themselves instead of for the team. Team sports have now become another avenue to continue on the "its all about me" course that our kids are on, rather than learning by working together for the common good we excel the most.

It would be much easier to foster a team first environment if these families were not expected to pay thousands of dollars in fees and travel to participate. With that kind of investment required they are forced to make it all about what am I getting in return.

So true. Somewhere along the way we have the lost what it means to be part of a team. Building a team over time is about impossible with the continuous changes to what clubs have the top leagues, cut throat tryouts, and parents who can't stand the other parents.

Nobody is paying $5000 a year just to get their kid some exercise, wake up and smell the river.

Many are - they just don't realize that's what it is yet. Why do you think there are so many clubs out there?

True, but nobody or not many would be willing to spend that kind of money and time if they were not after something more than their kids getting out in the open air and exercising.

Both ECNL and the DA are sold on exposure to college coaches and even USSF. Things used to be the other way, a kid would play a sport and if they were good the scouts would come to them.

I also wonder ECNL claims a high rate of kids who go from ECNL into college soccer every year. Well this year, the number of kids that are playing are the same number of spots on college roster are the same, but the kids are split between ECNL and DA. So that means percentage of kids playing ECNL or DA that won't ever get recruited will be higher than years past when the majority of top players were consolidated in the ECNL.

There's far more roster spots out there than ECNL filled in the past; NPL and other filled in the rest. Now it will be ECNL and GDA and the other leagues will feel the pinch.
