The true goal of the the GDA is to diminish the influence of ECNL. I think some people at US Soccer were feeling a little threatened by ECNL. Saying the goal was to make soccer more affordable and reaching the poor kids sound better. Not sure how you do this when your model actually costs more with a 10 months season and more travel games.

Bingo. The second GDA succeeds in running ECNL out of business look for GDA costs to skyrocket. Then you can pay even more than ECNL prices for the same quality product that delivered such stellar results for the USMNT this year.

          It is a business decision.

Lower cost for players for Thorns DA = More players and hopefully better players for Thorns DA = Better Thorns DA = More players play on Non Subsidized Academy Teams and TA Teams = More players participate in ODP = More players participating in Timbers/Thorns camps = More $$ for Timbers/Thorns

You lose your credibility if your academy teams are not the best teams in the state. You sell more product if your top academy teams do well because everyone wants to be tied into a winner.

Or...GDA might just open the door for lower income families with fantastic athletes to participate at the higher levels. Impact will take years, but it takes time to change and drive solid developmental results. It's an outcome that ECNL could never achieve based on their pay-to-play model.

If you pencil it out, there isn't mach subsidy. The fees they collect from the players pays most of the travel costs.

The small subsidy that is there goes mostly to upper income families. Low income kids really aren't in the equation.

Thorns DA has certainly gotten off to a rough start and yet the college recruits are still coming from the ECNL teams

Need to separate out GDA and Thorns.

The Thorns chose to subsidize cost to compete with ECNL in this marketplace. Not all GDA clubs are subsidizing costs.

When ECNL becomes less relevant and "elite" players have less choice in Oreogn, I am sure you will see a higher price tag to play in the Thorns Academy.

Now you are speaking out of your ass.

The ECNL season in Oregon has not started yet and there has not been any national showcase events for ECNL this season (since GDA started)

The college coaches are busy with there own season right now.

When you discount a vehicle at the end of the year to convince people to buy... is that a subsidy?

It is a business decision to draw better players to have a better team. With a better team they can draw revenue elsewhere. ?

The fees they collect from the players only pay a fraction of the entire cost for an academy team.

You need a pencil, cause you'll need to do some erasing. Airfare, hotels and rental cars aren't cheap. I work for a big corporation and even with negotiated discounts, a weekend must be ~$500/kid. That's 4 trips.

How is GDA opening the door for lower income families?

GDA is still based on a pay to play model.

It is more similar than different to ECNL.

The main difference is the real costs for GDA is more than ECNL. You are paying coaches now for a 10 month season rather than a 5 month season and you are traveling 2x as much. Who do you think will be paying for most of these costs?

The only thing GDA pays for is the referees and the Powerade. The referee fees are nominal and my daughter prefers Gatorade.

~$500 is on the low side. Need to include coach's travel cost and expenses.

Also other poster did not consider the cost of coach's salary for 10 months and field rental for 4x per week for 10 months. The coaches are not working for free. Salary alone will be another $30K per team.

Does that include parent travel? I heard the $10,000 a year for ECNL doesn't include parent travel.

My daughters college team has a recruit or recruits every weekend. Good college coaches recruit year around.

I know of a 2018 CU player who was just offered a spot at a west coast D1 school
