Very slippery slope. Why would any p[layer already recruited go to any showcase in any league ? Because they want to play and stay in game shape. Players who think the job is done once committed are not going to go very far. They are in for a huge shock in College.

I do agree that the cost of these events and the real benefits are totally out of all proportion. If you dont get what you want at the end of the journey it is a very expensive set of forced vacations

ECNL has similar complaints. Having more regional events would work better for clubs and many coaches.

Heck yes. Follow the money to see who really benefits from these silly national showcases to see where to apply pressure. It is not the ones paying to go.

Portland GDA travel for free & all expenses are paid except some personal food. The girls playing basketball instead aren't committed yet. The reason to skip GDA to play basketball is because basketball scholarships are full ride. Soccer scholarships of significance are hard to come by for Oregon girls. Very smart to drop out of GDA for awhile and keep up with basketball. Basketball scholarships are a better prize. No negative when GDA doesn't care. Surprised more GDA girls don't also play basketball.

Historically, extremely unlikely. Based on lower exposure? Lower talent? A combo of the two?

Oregon has had many top D1 basketball recruits so weather might play a factor. But even more rain in WA state doesn't stop them.

yet the thorns and timbers are as well supported as any team in the country ( on a relative basis)

Despite rarely getting Oregon girls into top college programs and almost never getting any onto national teams, Oregon might be the most soccer crazy and supportive state there is. The Timbers organization has taken over youth soccer, runs the leagues, state tourneys, odp, camps, and even the state youth soccer association, OYSA. Timbers are making way more than enough from the other youth to cover their academy teams. Pros and cons can be argued but I am glad they are investing in the girls as well. Timbers/Thorns even have teams in Idaho & NorCal(California Thorns, GDA). Maybe you'll get lucky and they'll open a GDA near you.

College coach friend returned from a GDAP event pissed off at US soccer. The 3 sub rule was utilized, so he and his fellow coaches wasted entire games waiting to watch specific players that had contacted them. Often the players didn't see the field. Or if they did, the coaches had given up or moved on, to again not see someone play.

And this was coming from a guy who grew up within and is typically supportive of US soccer. His budget hasn't increased. He has more tournaments to attend. The talent is more diluted. And to top it off, almost half the team, kids he would typically be targeting for his squad (Not UNC or UCLA), might not even play much.

The quote when I asked how his trip went was, "****e. A complete cluster f and waste of time."

Some coaches I've talked are definitely frustrated with now having to do more events. They don't have much money for travel (this isn't football). They're hoping things fall out between the two leagues but for now either have to find a way to make it work with both or make choices.

ECNL this weekend may turn into a cluster for some players and coaches trying to get to down to FL from this area. Lots of cancelled flights because of snow and wicked wind
