The fact that you don't really underscores that it is not the training.

Are you kidding? It is absolutely the training. By your logic Icelanders would need to be a race of super athletes for them to have produced a world class team.
Another piece of evidence: the best players leave the US as soon as they can . . . For better training.
Please, the coaching and talent identification in the US are subpar, well below the level to produce top players, and a competitive national team.

MLS is full of great athletes, some of the best anywhere, where they lack is with their soccer IQ and technical ability. We are getting better every year, but are still many years away from being a top contender.

The sports kids pick are more a function of culture, not their athletic ability. We do not have a soccer culture. Kids will gravitate to the more popular sports, the ones their friends play, their families follow on TV. Here the big 3 sports dominate. In the rest of the world soccer dominates.

Iceland got every coach UEFA A or B licensed. That means starting at 5 years old kids learn how to play soccer properly. Here kids have well intentioned but wholly unqualified volunteer parent coaches. By the time they get into DA - even if they're in by 12, which many are not - there's years of lost training. Then, as we know, DA coaching is inconsistent at best.

You clearly have a b' in your bonnet about the coaching in this country but the fact is the women in this country have done a heck of a lot more with a heck of lot less when it comes to their training environments and the reason is generally soccer gets the top level female athletes in this country.

The issue you are going at with the women is very different. It really comes down to money being the catalyst. On one hand you have someone discounting our women's dominance because it was fueled by title 9 and then on the other hand you want to claim that the big money that is now flowing into the women's game abroad and creating a sort of title 9 situation for the women in other countries is proof of their training superiority. The fact is what you are saying basically proves the point that it is not actual training programs it is the financial incentives that push the athletes into committing themselves to their sport that ultimately makes the difference. The big problem with soccer in this country on the men's side is the money in the game is not nearly good enough to convince the best athletes in this country to stay with soccer. The picture is very different on the women's side where largely because of title 9 and the huge head start our women got we are an export nation and now send our best and brightest overseas. The ratio of foreign players to American trained players in our college ranks is still very small.
The amount of soccer players in this country far outnumbers any other sport.
