    Women's soccer double standard?

    A lot has rightfully been made surrounding the Women's World Cup about the women's game deserving respect and a steady push for equality with the men's game in many aspects. But...

    ESPN FC had an interesting discussion on the England defender's own goal in the loss to Japan. If it had been a men's game, would there have been an outpouring of sympathy and you did your best / did us proud as there is today with Bassett? Probably not--think back on own goals in major men's tournament. Was there understanding and sympathy or death threats and hatred? Ask Escobar of Colombia...

    Female commentator with The Telegraph says the outpouring of sympathy for her is actually sexist. England is known for cruelly vilifying any player blamed for a loss. Interesting how this is playing out.
