Huh, didn't know anything about Gotsoccer but will be sure to check it out. Thanks!

Gotsoccer is useless--that's all about what tournaments you've played in.

Other ranking systems are better, but not by much.

Ranking systems are useful for flighting tournaments, but other than that--garbage in, garbage out.

And thus the reason USMNT didn't qualify for the world cup!
If USA soccer wants to be good then these things need to be focused on at an early age just like AAU basketball (USA is the best) little league world series, Pop Warner... We are good in the other sports because there are not people speaking nonsense like this article!

Or, being the only country in the world focused on playing basketball, baseball, and football is the reason we're good at it. Our athletes aren't better than any other country's athletes per capital.

No we have plenty of athletes who are capable of becoming soccer players. Other sports will always be a draw, but we don't need that many top athletes to create a top national team. There are soooooo many reasons why we lag the rest of the world. GotSoccer is one tiny piece

                - Culture: we don't have one. Kids don't aspire to become Messi, they aspire to become LeBron. Most kids don't watch professional soccer games with their families or friends week in and week out. They're not out playing pickup games everyday, practicing in the back yard. We're making some leeway but have a long way to go. the big 3 sports reign supreme and will for some time to come.

                - Poor training at the younger, very important ages: we largely rely on poorly trained volunteer or low level pro coaches who largely don't have a clue. In other sports there's far more daddy coaches who better understand the game and used to play themselves at a high level. U littles are the foundation years.

                - Poor coaching at the higher levels: Some BDA coaches still haven't met the criteria and definitely many GDA coaches aren't there yet. It only goes downhill from there as you move down the club pyramid.

                - Pay to Play - yes there are some scholarship opportunities out there but they are few and far between. Club fees, uniforms, costly travel keep man players out

                - Focus on results, not development. Clubs are guilty but the need wins to attract more players and fill their bank accounts. Parents are guilty in caring about their kids W/L record. This is where GS fits in. Some kind of system is necessary for tournament placement but it should be limited to organizer-only access. Keep the clubs and parents out of the system. lol who am I kidding....

Pay to play is the biggest stumbling block. Without significant changes to the soccer ecosystem in the USA to give clubs another form of income (ie. solidarity payments) and some incentive to develop players for their own pro teams (ie. promotion/relegation), the pay to play model will remain the standard. US Soccer and MLS/SUM have no intention of allowing either change to happen any time soon so keep saving your money for those club fees.

Think that is right. Federation could follow Iceland and use that $100 million to subsidize field and coaching development . . . think that might move the needle.

One point on the focus on winning and losing - Ajax posted some footage of one of their youth teams winning their first tournament, with parents taking the requisite facebook pictures. THE TEAM WAS U8.

Results focus works for about 95% of the kids playing soccer. Kids want to win. Parents want to win. 95% of kids would rather get a semi final win at mt hood challenge than become a better technical player. So I highly doubt anything will change.

It might not produce the best soccer players but it makes the largest number of people happy.

Winning isn't the issue. It's tracking the wins that's the issue. There's no way local leagues will walk away from rankings. GS (or another system) is a bit of a necessary evil for tournaments but shouldn't even be public until U14. #1 U11 team in the country lol lol lol lol. DA doesn't start rankings until U15 I think?

Every coach in Iceland is A or B licensed so even the youngest players are being taught properly from the start. Our youngest players are taught by volunteer dad's who last played soccer in high school

A- or B- licensed according to whom? Coaching licenses are issued by national federations, and an A license in the US may or may not be the same as an A license in Iceland.

                            To further analyze your thing:

                            1) The fact that volunteer dads are coaching is not the problem. The fact that many might not know what they are doing, is a problem. We've got lots of volunteer dads in Little League, Pop Warner, down at the Y, etc.--and we seem to be doing OK.

                            2) I know some volunteer dad (and mom!) coaches who are excellent--and many of whom play themselves, even if only an adult rec league.

                            3) If lots of children are showing up for U7 or U8 having never played the game before, that's a bigger problem than if kids are showing up for organized soccer who already know how to play--they just want refs and a nice field to play on.

UEFA license. Yes some volunteer coaches are very good, but many are not. https://www.theguardian.com/football...lars-lagerback

"Currently this nation of 335,000 has around 600 qualified coaches, 400 with Uefa B licences, or one per 825 people. To put this into context, in England this number falls to one per 11,000.

The result is a spread of expertise right down to the lowest level. “Here you need a Uefa B licence to coach from under-10 level up and half of the Uefa B licence to coach under-eights,” Dagur Sveinn Dagbjartsson of the Icelandic FA says. This isn’t simply box-ticking. The Uefa B is one step off the level needed to coach a professional team in England. Yelling dads it ain’t."
