Tough weekend for our New England teams. Where are we? Well, BC's loss to a decent (but not great) Pepperdine team basically ends their chances at a top 4 seed. With FSU, Duke, UNC and Maryland left on their schedule they can still technically (and mathematically) get into the Top 8 but based on what we have seen of the Eagles this year; does anyone not directly associated with the program legitimately believe that they will emerge with more than a win and a tie from those games? What is emerging on Chestnut Hill is a lot more of what we saw last year. They are a Top 20 side, but not a National quarter finalist and definitely not a Final Four team. Dartmouth has Pepperdine next, and that NL game (and a future game with BU) pus a top 60 RPI mean the Big Green are the only other NE team with any real chance at an at-large bid. So tomorrow is the day for Dartmouth, win and their chances durvive - lose and they must win the Ivy!!
The rest all ended their outside chances at an at-large berth. BU continues to dominate the AE (although notice that the scores are closer) but lose RPI points because the competition is weak. Hartford and Stony Brook are on the upcoming docket and my guess that one of them will finally blemish BU in-conference, but even if they don't. its over for the Terriers. U Mass getting crushed by Dayton ends their chances. They are still at a respectable 75 in the RPI (not bad for a 6-6 record) but a weak league schedule means that even if the Minutewomen win out and get to the A-10 Finals, they will get to the bubble but miss out. U Conn's 4-0 loss to ND is a bad blow because it was a blow-out. Arguably the Huskies still have enough RPI value in the rest of the regular season, and via a long rin in the BE Tourney, but does anyone outside Storrs believe they won't lose a few more games? Lose to Marquette (and probably SFU) and absent a Big East title... they are done.
As expected, the other Ivies have slipped badly. Harvard's tie with a sub 200 C Conn side kills them and Brown is now under 100 in the RPI. This is not good for Dartmouth who will face plenty of parity (and deperation) in the regular Ivy League schedule! Providence has come to earth after a bright start. Their hope has always been to get to the Big East Tournament and become a huge Cinderella. They have kept it close with ND and G-Town, but beating two or three more talented sides in the BE tourney is an almost impossible task for the Friars. Maine retains some hope in the AE, although I don't think they can beat both Hartford and SB in the tourney. Quinnipiac and Bryant retain punchers' chances in the NEC. Monmouth and St. Francis are the favorites, but there is enough parity in that league to like the local entries come November!
I guess that the New England Big Six (BC, BU, U Conn, Harvard, Northeastern and U Mass) have all been relative disapointments. BC is at 13 in the RPI and near the top of the ACC, but they have yet to beat a top 20 team and you get the feeling that the Eagles are again very good, but not quite a legitimate national contender. The rest have all severely underperformed. BU, U Mass and NU all have played monster NL slates - and lost to every top team on their schedules - but its the other falls (to lesser sides) that killed their AL chances. Harvard's tie to Central is their downfall and U Conn just hasn't found a way to beat any6 of the better teams on their schedule... such a bright start against UCLA has dimmed!!

UConn outplayed ND in the first half today, out shooting them 11-3. They tired, gave up a soft foul and direct kick right before the half and never recovered. UConn lacks the depth, particularly at defense and goalie, to win the Big East or deserve an NCAA bid, although they're still the second best team in New England behind the high flyin' Eagles.

I didn't see the game, but read the stats and team write ups. Having seen UConn earlier in the season, their weaknesses were evident, especially the lack of cohesive team play, especially defensively.
