By the time we’re there, they’ll all be too old
Will we ever have players good enough in the now?

Eventually, we will have enough players training overseas to make up a decent Men's NT, but never enough players trained here in the US to make the MLS a quality league.

Are those soccer specific stadiums or large basketball arenas capacity-wise? Perhaps the high fill rate is due to exceptionally few seats in large cities and many of those tickets being given away or deeply discounted.

This data is ancient. This thread was from a decade ago.

They're not far as apart from each other except for Seattle and Atlanta. 18-22 thousand per game.

I’m glad you posted the correct data above. I was wondering why the other poster’s data was missing teams who’ve had soccer-specific stadiums for awhile like Phila Union. Stadium attendance has been growing even for the lousy Revs.

TV ratings are another matter. My feeling is that the timing of games (middle of day, etc.) and lack of advertising hurts.

My take is that Americans like sports that originated here, as well as, violent contact sports like hockey, boxing, UFC, etc. I think soccer will always be seen as a “foreign” sport. Even worse, since soccer is a popular kid’s sport in America that most seem to outgrow, it’s regarded as a childish activity like playing dodgeball or something. The pay to play model is also not helping since it turns what should be an assessible, cheap sport (a ball and a field) into an exclusive club.

My kids haven't outgrown soccer, but have outgrown the MLS. When they were younger, they used to watch the Revs games every weekend on TV, and we would attend a half dozen games a season. My kids knew all the players and wore the latest Revs jerseys.

Now that they are middle school aged, they watch EPL every weekend, along with Champions League matches and other European league games, if they can find a broadcast. MLS is only tuned into when the other leagues are on their summer breaks and we might attend a game or two every season. It's too bad that even at their ages, they can see the difference in quality and it affects their enthusiasm for the league. We want to keep supporting the MLS to grow the sport in the country, so still try to put the Revs games on during summer weekends, but our kids end up wandering away 10 minutes into the game in search of better entertainment.

We've taken our kids to Europe a few times (piggyback with work trips and I have an absurd amount of miles) and taken them to a few matches there. They're hooked. They've been to a few MLS games here, they have fun and all, but they watch international matches.

I cut out of work early yesterday ahead of the snow and watched Man U vs PSG Champions League at 3pm ET. It was great, but not something I could do all the time. Who the heck has time to watch these games in the middle of a work day?! The TV ratings here will always suck since the game times aren’t built around an American audience. Somehow it just isn’t the same watching DVR games, even if I had the time...

Rarely miss a UCL game. I have managed to strategically plan to be work from home, stream, or take a late lunch at the pub.

The games are in Europe and are their time. So, we get them in the afternoon.

                          Plan accordingly.

Saturday mornings on the couch, kid by my side and dogs on the other, are my favorite times of the week.

It’s hard to even call MLS pro soccer when you watch European games. The ManU game yesterday was non-stop and beautiful ball handling and defense by PSG. Dani Alves is 35 and tears around the field like a 20 yr old the whole game. Watch MLS and we have 20 yr olds that get winded after 15 minutes, stand around, and routinely miss passes. No sign of passion in their faces, they always look like it’s a tryout.

I firmly believe the key for the US to get to that level will require a true MLS academy system starting from U-15 with attractive signing $ if they make it to U-19. College should not even be an option if you want to be a pro since it is a total distraction imo.
