As one poster noted, some colleges are closing or merging. I don't see any top dogs (academics and/or athletics), but it is happening.

NCAA should be tapping into it's treasure chest for the athletes and not just post-season play. Every time they run that commercial noting the percentage of athletes competing in either D1, D2 or D3 programs, every school should get a piece of that marketing. It (NCAA) has no platform unless school athletics survives and it takes athletes to make that happen.

Laugh away. Disbelieve all you want. Post stupid articles that actually say the opposite of your intended point. Knock yourselves out. Not you average D3 wannabe parent speculating on things with no actual experience. I lived it all myself and have taken two kids through this all. If your kid has the talent and you approach things reasonably there’s plenty of money to be had. What so many of you are prattling in about are really marginal players that no one really wanted. That’s the reason you have so many negative comments. Nothing worked out for your kid but doesn’t mean that everyone’s kid comes away with a stink finger. Understand where your kid fits and target accordingly. It’s not terribly difficult if your kid has talent and you as the parent aren’t complete blowhard morons like some of you come across.

So true. When you get right down to it the parent of a practice player in the patriot league doesn’t actually know much more about D1 scholarships than your average D3 parent. About the same level of talent also which is why they all think their kids could be D1. Neither one had any actual money opportunities but the D1 practice player’s parent’s story sounds better at the water cooler.

Responding to your own post again.

No one finds it funny when you make fun of the college an individual player chooses. You have no idea about the family's circumstance nor the player's profile. Might be the perfect school for their situation. If they got an athletic scholarship for 80% and they are happy with the situation who are you to judge?

You may want to read "Where you Go Is Not Who You'll Be"
Kind of blows up your belief that highly selective schools matter for anything other than parent bragging rights.

What if the player is getting 75% or more in the patriot league and plenty of playing time? What about 50%? Where is the line in “stupid parents” targeting wrong or going D1 when they shouldn’t?

Why hating on the Patriot League? There are plenty of other leagues and many way worse as far as sports and academics. Let's not get league specific. Sounds like hurt butts here for sure.

Would it make a difference if kids also were offered full rides at P-5 schools? My understanding is that a full ride at a P-5 is even harder to achieve and turn down.
Is that stupid parent; stupid player or someone looking for something else?

The truth is no one is really “stupid” because you’re working with limited information and you really aren’t in the driver’s seat other than helping your kid make the best choice. The buyer is this market is the college coach since they are doing the shopping. I always enjoy the posters who boast about how well they “targeted” schools, when really anyone who’s been through this recruiting process knows that:

                        1) your kid really has (or should have) the final call and we all know that teenage kids are fickle and hard to read. My D surprised me (fortunately pleasantly) a few times in narrowing down schools. So you as the parent can target all you want, but the X variable is what school does your kid really want to go to?

                        2) some posters imply that parents/kids don’t target appropriately, but honestly the college coach is your backstop to prevent the wrong choice. They can judge skill and know what they need. If you don’t have the skills to fill their needs, you won’t get contacts or offers; and if you do, then you’ll get your fair share.

                        3) some posters make a big deal about which division/league/team is best athletically, but those of us who’ve been through this would probably tell you that doesn’t matter. What matters is you get your degree and enjoy your experience both on and off the field. That’s the “prize”, not a trophy.

Yours is a mistake a lot of parents make. You see yourself as hopeless against whimsical coaches when the reality is when you peg the level correctly and find the sweet-spot where coaches project your player to be capable of having a high level of impact for them, the coaches absolutely become active buyers. This applies to every level. You don’t have to be an ACC or PAC12 level player to have coaches drooling over your kid. You just have to let the level correctly.

You absolutely mistake the point. Huge fan of the PL. I look at you as having won the game. My comment was about those on your roster who get nothing or next to nothing. How are they really any different than the folks here who claim they sent their kids to D3 because the education was so much better.. really??

Please don’t act like some sort of guru (club coach, right?). No one’s saying that anyone is helpless, but college coaches are experienced and you’d be foolish to ignore their feedback or offer size (or lack thereof) in the process. It’s not like they are clueless practice dummies and you are somehow going to sell them on your kid if the skills aren’t what they need. So you can plot and plan, but where the rubber meets the road is to make contact and go to ID camps and ultimately the coach decides whether they want to make an offer.

No I’m a parent just like you. The big difference is I’ve always known that athletes are a commodity. There is a market for them out there you just need to figure out where it is. The clubs want you ignorant because once you understand how everything works out you start looking at your club coaches and start demanding that they actually do something for your kid. The problem then is most of the club coaches are absolute frauds who are either too lazy or too stupid to do the job you hired them to do. They are on her making all sorts of excuses for the simple fact that they either can’t or won’t make the critical phone calls for you. Far better for them to cloud the process in mystery so the parents end up have no f**king clue what’s going on. You seem to be feeding into it.
