Her parents made her go to Santa Fe community college and transfer in as a junior. Transfering into UF might get harder though if community college students are to have the required ACT - SAT to get in? The standards must be different for community college students.
Colleges look at transfer students differently. Typically once they've completed so many hours then HS and SAT becomes irrelevant (one school told us 30 credit hours or more, others whatever the equivalent of a year's worth of classes for a full time student). It's about how they do in college and what college. Schools know all too well many very smart kids can't get in as freshmen or afford to attend a premium 4 year college. The competition is too strong, and some students may be late bloomers so their cumulative GPA wasn't the greatest but they show progressive improvement. That doesn't mean they aren't very bright and can't succeed at a certain school. They also know that a certain %age of freshmen will either drop out or transfer out.

This may be the way to get into UF, FSU and UCF. AA is 60 hours but may apply as nearing their AA degree. UF can tout its admitted freshmen class as 4.4-1400SAT but ultimately have mostly community college type students not that they aren't deserving for working hard in college.

When narrow down the subgroups get reality. 55,862 total undergraduate & graduate, Select 2017, Select freshmen to narrow to 2,959 freshmen, Select gender males to narrow down to 1,224 freshmen boys, then about 23% of the boys are from out of state (282 boys), ..

leaving only 942 FRESHMEN BOYS FROM IN-STATE -headcount FALL Cohort 2017.

Then can narrow down by race groups even more. The chances of getting in as a male as a freshmen is slim- less than one boy a high school in Florida.

Then ask the question why must we push our high school males to take full college loads of AP and DE classes in high school? Let them be normal high school students and transfer into college like all the other community college students will do in two years.

The race began 30 years ago. Our high school had genius students and AP and DE back then too. The high schools had the Florida Academic scholarship (Bright Futures) back then too. It was hard to get into UF back in the day. It is UF changing its business plan and blocking out qualified in-state students. Then the other students and state universities feel the crunch even more. The mean GPA for the incoming admitted class at UCF is 4.0. The students must take honors and college prep classes in high school or they will be at the community college working their way into UF in two.

um because you want your kids to learn how to work hard towards a goal? To have many more opportunities vs an average student, even if it doesn't work out. Kids that barely make the cut will still have many opportunities to attend other fantastic schools. Sure that might involved going out of state. But no one should tell their kids to aim for average and phone it in. If they're disappointed in not getting in it's natural but it's not the end of the world. Shake off the dust and get back up in the saddle again.

This is an issue facing higher ed in general and the landscape is shifting. With the cost of college now families want to know they're getting a bang for their education buck. So their kids apply to the "better" schools with more prestige/big name and good graduation rates,. assuming the kid is more likely to finish in 4 years instead of 5+ and that it will be easier to land a good job after school. Schools that aren't so prestigious are actually seeing some declines in enrollment, and a few underperforming schools are already closing their doors or will in the next 5-10 years. Doesn't help that demographics aren't in their favor with a big population bust after this year.

The Florida students all apply to all the Florida universities to see where they can get in. UF received 40,000 applications for summer/fall '18 and 34,000 applications for summer/fall '17. UF had to reject more students than ever before. The population is increasing in Florida, the Florida students are qualified, yet UF and FSU choose to go recruit out-of-state using a new common applicaiton making it easy for students to mass apply who have no intention of attending Florida if they get admitted. Watched three of our daughter's friends who got into UF turn down their offers to go to FSU, MIT, and UVA. Watched students get in from out of state with far less qualifications but UF has a holistic admissions process and doesn't even accept high school transcripts when they apply.

UF and FSU have admissions contacts who travel around the U.S. and the nation recruiting.

For fall 2017 over 34,000 freshmen applicants to UF and it ended up with 942 freshmen boys from in-state in its fall 2017 headcount. Yes some ended up in the sophomore headcount but blah blah blah. For fall 2018, over 40,000 applicants to UF. The outlook is bleak for in state boys getting admitted to UF.

It's already easier for girls to play soccer in college. Do colleges need to do more to equal out the gender diversity of those admitted? UF admits 20% more girls than boys in its freshmen class.

The only truth known is personal experience having a very qualified student who did not get accepted. Then see the other talented students who did not get accepted, like only a handful from one of the top public highschools in Florida and those who got in are not accepting because UF is below their 4.6 genius. Then you look at the thousands of successful students all over the state and even alumni children with 1400s not getting in. UF admissions says on the phone "we have lots of 1400 students we are not admitting" like they are proud of it. NotOurUofF

A friend admitted she is preparing her daughter and spouse that their very smart daughter may not be a Gator like they were. Taking some college road trips to Alabama and Auburn over the summer.
