WUP Black - parents still drink at the games on the sidelines.
WUP Red - parents seem to have a little more class.

In other words, other than the name change, I don't see a lot of change.

Could be true, but perhaps WUP understands that bigger isn't always better. The '13-14' coaches roster shown on website looks like they may have cleared out a lot of weaker coaches and eliminated 'C" teams.
          Good long term strategy.

Meaning...? At which age groups and which gender?

If you are considering a move to WUP, evaluate the individual teams/coaches to see if tis a good fit.

With the advent of dual rostering with Scorps/Breakers, there will be the same issues as you've read about with ECNL players guesting on SW and Stars teams.

WUP has the bonus of nice facilities, including the stadium which is now turf.

WUP struggled to bring the two organizations together this year but hopefully this will improve for next year if they simply choose A and B teams based on talent rather than former club affiliation. However, on the girls side, its hard to predict what will happen next year because of the partnership with Scorps/Breakers. The boys side should continue to field at least 1 strong team per age group.

On the girls side, the upcoming 14s and 15s may struggle to field competitive teams since many of the top players have a chance to play ECNL or NPL. I also heard the incoming 15s are losing most of the starting players either to ECNL/NPL, dropping soccer for hs sports, or moving on BUT you never know who will show up at tryouts.

                amazing mediocraty

There are only a few people in western mass who can take that club and make it into a power house. The dummies who refuse to let go and realize how incompetent they are need to get a clue and allow someone who knows what's going on to run with it. Those facilities are being put to waste. Those guys in Ludlow have shown they can put down a field and goal posts too. But when it comes to structure, vision and planning, they are an absolute disaster. The poeple at the top of that organization need to go away.

The two "Directors" have zero qualifications. That's probably why they aren't on the website. The majority of the coaches are better qualified.

Welcome to club soccer. That's the same story with 90% of the clubs. The few that are run by people with vision do survive, grow, and prosper. Unfortunately, to run a club right they have to have the background as a player at a high enough level (college), coach, leader and visionary. Hard to come by.

So sorry you child didn't make either team and you kid isn't good enough to be a part of either team. a little bit of class mixed with a little bit of fun isn't such a bad thing. too bad you will never be a part of. you will be losing a lot of players to this classy partying group so be prepared.

You know it's tryout time when the trolls come out in full force and don't let the facts stand in the way of their arguments. WUP had more teams in the State Cup round robins than all clubs other than the much larger MPS, NEFC, and Stars, and more than four times as many teams in the round robins--and six times as many teams in the State Cup semifinals--than any other WMass club. Lots of clubs around the state would settle for that kind of "mediocrity."

Completely driven by the WU side, the P side remained crap

The most money hungry "Development" program I've ever seen. They charge families an arm and a leg, then will deliver little in return in terms of coaching quality and cancel many practices.

Not really true. U16's are a P team, with a few W's added, and though they got bumped in round robin from State Cup, they did win subregion to qualify for Region 1 Premier next year; placed first in NEP ; & won MAPS cup gold this weekend.

WUP put more teams into the NEP NPL finals than any other club, and won two NPL age groups, matching CFC for best (MPS got one, Aztecs 1, NEFC none). Those teams were sliced and diced by calendar age, giving the club a chance to put together groups of players from different teams on the W and P side of the club as well as experimenting with calendar age groups. And WUP did win a state cup for the first time in several years, for the U19s. One of the clear objectives of the two merging boards was to make Western MA relevant again at the state level, which hopefully will bear more fruit in coming years.

It is true that WUP did not apply high pressure on teams to sort players. But who really wanted them to? Almost certainly not most of the the families that were well settled onto teams, many of those only able to play within a particular commuting distance. I think it has become easier for players to move between teams than before, and easier to sort players more quickly than the traditional gradual adjustments by stronger players changing teams over a few years. The real proof will be in the youngest teams and over a period of a few years; but who doesn't agree that it is a plus for the region if they succeed ?
