One League. One State Cup and Promotion-Relegation

In Massachusetts it’s time for change. We need to make the sport what it should be and strengthen our state back to what it used to be in the 90s and Early 00s.

Why do we have two leagues in this state?

Why don’t we just have one league, separate into Divisons 1 to 20 if need be and use Promotion - Relegation.

Why do we have 2 State Cups and it’s sad in NEP not every team even has a chance to compete in the state cups. Why don’t we just have one State Cup, one True State Champion. Set a way that lower division teams play there games early on in the season. Single elimination until there at 16 teams in the each age group left and do a group play weekend and then a semi final and final weekend. This is how they used to do it.

The whole country as a whole needs change as soccer in this country is becoming so watered down because all they want is there pockets lined with money, but let’s start something to become competitive again.

Thoughts? Ideas? I am all in for change.

Unfortunately, the drivers (parents) are not interested in doing what is best for the sport; they want what the perceive is best for their kid and only their kid. The more team, the more leagues, the more opportunity for a parent to shop teams until they find one that will blow the appropriate amount of smoke up their a--.

This and there's too much money to be made by clubs and leagues. They've tasted the nectar and there's no going back.

It’s not really as simple as you see it. The landscape was drawn by USSF and you really need to understand the competing sanctioning bodies to really understand why we have what we have here. Below is a pretty good article which sort of explains a few things:

That was US Club Soccer who did that. They gave us the ECNL who did everything in their power to usher in the mega clubs. US Youth Soccer was all of Town programs. They were affordable except at least in this part of the country they were corrupt and lining their pockets.

Quite cynical, but unfortunately, quite accurate as well.
The majority of young foreign coaches in this country can’t get work as kindergarten teachers at home, so over here they come. And that’s not to lay blame, it’s more to point out the sad shape of things infrastructurally here.

I like the idea of having a separate cup competition outside of your league. Not sure of the logistics (how many teams to get through) but you could start it in early Fall with lower teams and gradually bring in NEP, then NPL, ECNL & DA teams after further rounds. Would work similar to the FA Cup, or any open Cup competition.

I think we should play quidditch with jetpacks on our backs. It's just a likely.

"The United States soccer league system is a series of professional and amateur soccer leagues based, in whole or in part, in the United States. Sometimes called the American soccer pyramid, teams and leagues in the United States are not linked by the system of promotion and relegation typical in soccer elsewhere. Instead, U.S. Soccer (USSF) officially defines leagues in levels, called divisions, with the top three sanctioned directly by the USSF."

All USSF would have to do is sponsor an "open" national cup where your sanctioning affiliation didn't matter. The problem is that is contrary to the "everyone gets a trophy" philosophy that is articulated above. The single largest issue right now is there really isn't any movement for players between the levels that they have created.

I agree 100%. Go do it. Let me know when you've changed everything.

2 or 3 of the responses in this short thread are likely from coaches or club officials. Its not the parents fault we have a non-sensical system. Follow the dollars.

yes $chasing clubs are part of the problem, but parents contribute to it. If they didn't buy into the BS, keep moving their kids around hoping a coach will discover their hidden talent, dreaming of scholarships that will never materialize, and keep writing the checks then the $pool would be smaller = fewer clubs and fewer leagues

Let me get this straight. You want to go back to what it once was when MAPLE was the only real league and Region 1 was the only regional league that was part of the only real national league. Sure, MPS (then) played in the Super something league but that was essentially where all their teams were and they essentially played with themselves.
Now we have multiple leagues in the state, New England, and nationally. However, DAP is a sole league which is supposedly the top competition.
