Yes, by grade! Simple!

Default ECNL should switch to grade/grad year!

It's causing the one third of kids born in Sept - Dec to have no team to play with in the fall of the 8th grade and causing similar issues in the 12th grade. It hurts these kids when it comes to college recruiting, because of the confusion it causes college coaches. Not to mention that soccer registration is down 25% since the mandate went into place, likely because young kids want to play sports with their same-grade classmates.

The birth year mandate creates issues and offers no benefits. It all just shows how inept US Soccer is. It's no wonder we can't qualify for a world cup. Nothing would benefit this country more than having the Federation just go away.
Exactly! Baffled that ECNL hasnít figured this out yet. ECNLís ace in their war with GDA/DA is ECNL has their own league, playoffs and showcases. Just do all your teams by grade instead of birth year (just call them birth year to be within USSF mandate: U19=seniors, U18=juniors, U17=sophomores and on down the line). If an ecnl team wants to do a non-ecnl tourney, no problem - the ecnl team would just have some younger players on their team is all.

Going by grade would get ECNL the majority of the 8th/9th girls and also the majority of the juniors and seniors because GDA has to have just one U18+U19 team. ECNL could have full separate U19 and U18 teams. Now that players canít begin the recruiting process until almost junior year, all the more important to have two separate teams for the juniors and the seniors. Half a year more players at the front end too. Would mean more money and more market share for ecnl!

What do you call the start of the school year? July, August, September, or October? Schools throughout the country are different.

What difference does it make? The goal of most kids playing competitive soccer is to play college ball, so it makes total sense to organize by graduation year. The grade that you are in is the peer group that your in competition with for scholarships &, just like every other American sport, this is how the league should be aligned. It also solves the 8th grade/12th grade issues discussed above...

It matters because of the cut-off date when you consider 'school year'.

Need to keep up.

Group by year of graduation (lax does this)... problem solved and college coaches would like it better when recruiting.

Aaaah, my mistake. They went from "School year" to "Birth year" and thought that was what you were referring to.

So, I'm the one that needs to keep up.....

Young 2002's in a bad situation, too. They are juniors while many/most of their teammates are seniors who don't really care about the showcases senior year since they already have their commitments or have decided not to play college soccer. The juniors, meanwhile, are in their most important year for recruiting and really need the showcases.

US youth soccer is the silliest organization in sports, what other sport would alienate 8th and 12th graders... crazy dumb
