1) You have to expand down to NY/NJ metros from the smaller New England region to get a comparable pool of players that you might find in CA. So yes, the Northeast ECNL with teams ranging from NH all the way down to MD can find some team that can occasionally beat a CA team.
2) ECNL is strong on the East Coast, but not as many clubs on West Coast. Probably 70+% of ECNL clubs are east of the Mississippi. More clubs in other leagues including DA out West.
3) A lot of the best CA schools are public schools which offer low or nearly free in-state tuition whereas the better schools here tend to be private. Hard to entice a top CA recruit to come East when their scholarship there is closer to a full ride. Harder still to come from East Coast and pay out-if-state tuition for a public CA school plus #4 below.
4) Most of CA is really expensive. You’ll be paying NYC prices for off-campus housing, transportation, etc. anywhere near a big metro like LA, SF, or San Diego. A lot of New England schools outside Boston itself are relatively cheap.
