Not a waste
Waste is a relative term, not an absolute. What is a waste to one, is an essential to another.
I believe that kids need a few things to develop into well rounded adults.
1. A happy childhood
2. A good education
3. Confidence
4. Social exposure
5. Problem solving skills
6. Self Discipline and responsibility
All the above are not absolute requirements, but the more of them you hit the greater the chances of a successful happy life.
Many of the conversation pieces surrounding these leagues, the travel, the costs, the ELITE 'ness' of it all... they are missing the point.
All a parent has to do, all I do, is ask myself in every decision I make for my daughter, is whether or not I'm on track to deliver the above. If I am, and my decisions are made with the above in mind, then whatever she does, is not a waste.
There are no D1, aspirations, or USWMNT aspirations with parents, those are bred from within the kids themselves and nurtured by their spirits and their potential.
But you would be doing a tremendous disservice to your child to prevent her from participating in anything because of the weight or size of her mother, or the athleticism of her father.
Genes are important of course in the end product of the truly elite athletes of the world, but they are not determinants in any child getting what they need from any environment to grow, develop, and mature into a well rounded adult.
